2016 quarter error? I have tons more coins people so please be kind

Hi it's me again.

I'll be posting coins off and on over the next few weeks tons of them.

Asking for your forgiveness now.


Here is the first. Found this quarter at the bottom of my purse and thought well why not. It looks to be an error on the obverse in a round centered cut. Perhaps next coin was to be a dime? Or maybe the cut away from the tail?

What do you think? Worthy of keeping or trying to sell? Oh and there appears to be something right unDer the bust maybe initials or maybe crud left over?

Damage from a counting or rolling machine.

 

I would have agreed but look at the letters it is as if the letters were cut into it after the circle was made

 

PMD. They didn't leave the Mint like that.

 

OK so toss that into the coin jar. Onward ho to the next ones shortly.

 

Hang on I just got one from a roll of quarters that is in great shape but has the circle cut on it. Something is up with this one.

 

Was it at the end of the roll? That circle is rolling machine damage.

On another question, why do you think "Perhaps next coin was to be a dime?"

You might want to learn how coins are made first. Otherwise you might thing tons of things are errors when they are not. And need to identify when wear and tear is simply wear and tear and not an error.

Just by them being in your purse can cause a lot of scratches and can affect letters and dates and mint marks being scraped and damaged. Learn how to identify damage which has infinite possibilities.

 

Stop listening to people who have no clue what they are talking about. As a Numismatics Forensics expert, I can tell you the 98% of planchettes that people have deemed such are wrong. Anytime someone in these forums have no clue they deem it PMD Here is something else. You will not damage a coin unless you pie4ce the heavy coating on the coin. All coins have a thick coating and why a grade can be altered with hot water and two other chemicals

No buddy you got me wrong. I have been collecting Mint Errors for 33 years now so don't come here stating that I/we don't know anything. I know exactly how damage happens!

Coating? Bought a 1924 d cent last month that was coated with a brown sticky lacquer. Seller refunded & said keep it. Quick acetone bath & not a bad coin. Not a gem but... Pointed out to seller 3 more on site with same patina. Took them down.

 

All coins have a thick coating? I've been collecting coins for more than half a century. I've dealt with fantastic people. Not one I've known has made a rash statement like this.

If there is a coating on the coin then it's, pardon me, PMD. Coins do not leave the Mint with a coating.

Heavy coating? LOL

In all seriousness, as a Numismstic Forensics expert, please explain the minting process, how so many collectors are wrong, how the US Mint protects coins and how despite this protection, damage occurs. Thank you.
