1970 S penny found

Im new here, and I purchased 20 dollars worth of penny rolls in germany. Im in the Army. We don't really use pennies here so the US banks on post are happy to sell them. Any way I found a 1970 S penny and I can't tell whether it is the small or large date. Does anyone know the best way to tell the difference?

Thank you for your service during the cold war. Im fast approaching my 21st year and just waiting on my retirement paperwork to come back. I was just around that area a few weeks ago. I will drink a hefe weizen, and kristall weizen for you. Thanks I will post pics a little later!

I wish I could. There is a small brewery just around the corner from where I live. They make excellent weizen and dunkel! But I probably will not return to the states for a while. I plan on living here.

 

It's almost 100% that it's large. The bottom of the nine is sharp in the SD and blunt in the LD. The important marker is how closed the 9 is. In the SD it is turned in all the way in the LD it points down to the foot of the 7. The weak strike of LIBERTY is another SD marker, and in the LD it is a better strike.

You can see the curl of the 9 is pointing to the foot of the 7 and LIBERTY is well struck.

Also, next time you take a picture of a coin. Do not use the cell phone flash. Go to a very well lite area. then the shutter speed of your phone/camera will provide a more crisp and detailed picture. Also try cropping it like my picture without all the space.

 

I find that marker to be more subtle and harder to tell.

 

Thanks for the lesson guys. Now I can reference this the next time I run into a 70s. Btw I did not use a flash that was my magnifying glass it has a bright light on it. The lighting is bad in my house.

 

I just went to a coin show and bought a mans 1970s b.u. roll for 1.25 they all look proof was that a bargain or is this common?
