It would be very interesting and instructional to learn how, in one day, a coin comes out of the ground looking like this: and becomes this: Do you use electrolysis? If not, how do you clean these silver coins so well and quickly? I think a sequence of 5 - 10 pictures showing the various stages of cleaning, from beginning to end, would be very well received by the collectors on this site, even those of us who will never excavate and clean coins.
hi IOM01..l never using electrolysis..when silver coin is of good quality like this one, cleaning is very easy..l put a coin in lemon juice, and after 2-3 hours using cloth or toothbrush and come up nicely..the problem with silver coins, when is coins been burned in the past, for some reason..in that case, l gave coin to good friend of mine to clean under microscope..l had photos of the cleaning process in my past texts, like my alexander severus sestertius..
I was told long ago that people who find many of these coins and the people to whom they sell them are very good at identifying the uncleaned lumps. Even an amateur like me can see the Severus Alexander before cleaning but the reverse was not obvious. Do you agree with the ability of people you know to select coins worth cleaning and those not for the most part?
oh yes, dougsmit..when l found this sestertius, l know is a.sever..but l ve been thinking for a long time about whats on reverse..and, l checked on internet, acsearch info and coin archive, and, bingo..when l find coin with soil on it, l just "open" on few places, head, letters etc..if its patina ok , no rust, then you continue with cleaning..but, sometimes, people like to take a chance, and buy coin like that, partly cleaned..
