No, I see nothing that says the planchet
    was an error either.

    It's a nickel struck from overused/worn dies

Upon searching the die deterioration I found that 'foreign' object in the die when coin was struck causes this result - but thank you all for your spontaneous but incorrect reply.

That is classic die deterioration. But hey, just send it in and have it looked at. Then there won't be anyone left to argue with.

die deterioration removes the surface of the die, am I correct, it doesn't leave metal on the surface to cause a recess in the metal. the removal of the surface causes weak strikes. this is an indention into the metal. Not wanting to argue but trying to learn as much about coins as I can. I can't see how 'die deterioration' causes an impression into the surface of the metal. Still researching this and I may end up sending it in. if so, it will be an expensive lesson for sure.

Our replies were not spontaneous, and are not incorrect.

Be sure to let us know the outcome. What do you think it will be worth?

Would someone post some links to this if possible for research. I'm not sure of the 'jargon' or terms of description for this.

Not looking for value, just wanting to gain knowledge about coins.

If this is true, research the name Fred Weinberg.

If Fred says no, you don't have anything.
