I was checking pocket change when I found this one, looks like mint error to me? The east and west windows on Monticello are missing...

Weak strike or just worn off the coin from circulation.

Secret service put up black out windows ;).... Agree with @Pickin and Grinin . Hard to tell on a worn business strike. May just be worn off. I see a lot of these with what seem to be weak strikes. Combine that with years of wear and there's no telling what you end up with.

those are grooves not 'WORN' , it's actually missing metal in both areas

If either of you look at the east window, it looks like chisel marks, not worn at all.
Do you both need a bigger picture ?

Those are worn nickels. And I would bet they aren't better than a vf in grade.

Not looking for value, looking for errors. Which this one is.

I am not claiming value either, a VF is a well circulated worn coin. This means that details have been removed from the coin.
Hence the visually missing windows you have stated. Whether or not the windows are there, is a completely mute subject now that the coin is not in mint state, it is anyone's best guess.

Try this one, maybe it will show what I'm asking about. The gouge is on both end windows, more on the east one than west. It's recessed into the metal, not worn off. I maybe new to the forum but I do know the difference of worn and missing metal,

And do you not think this is due to worn, overused dies? Then what do you think it is due to?

Wouldn't over use dies cause it to appear as 'worn' but not in a gouge as in missing metal, that is a groove in the metal which looks like chisel marks from not being polished properly ?

That 'over used die' would have to be broken at that point thus causing a die error with lack of metal in those areas.

I think it's mint error or broken die marks. What else causes a groove in the metal.

Do some studying on die deterioration, you will find confirmation in Fred's answer.

An 'overused die' does not have to have a break or crack
    to be an overused die.
