May had been a pretty busy month for me in terms of coins purchased (compared to other months since I started ancient collecting one year ago). Most are kind of related or part of a group that I'll post later, so I thought I'd write a little post of some ad hoc coins that I've taken adoption of this past month. I'll start with this Maximianus with Africa reverse: Maximianus, First reign, 286-305 AD AE Follis, Carthage mint, 2nd officina. Struck 297-298 AD Obverse: IMP MAXIMIANVS P F AVG, Laureate head right. Reverse: FELIX AD-V-ENT AVGG NN, Africa standing facing, head left, wearing elephant skin headdress and holding signum and tusk; at feet to left, lion with captured bull; H in left field; PKS in exergue. References: RIC VI 23b, RCV 3630, Van Meter 035 Then, inspired by a talk a couple months ago about Elagabalus at my local Ancient Coin Collecting Club, and of course TIF's pony parade post (and I had mentioned in a recent post that this coin was in transit), I adopted this horned Elagabalus denarius: Elagabalus, 218-222 AD AR Denarius, Rome Mint, Struck 220-222 AD Obverse: IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG (no break), Horned, laureate, draped and bearded bust right. Reverse: INVICTVS SACERDOS AVG, Elagabalus, in Syrian priestly robes, standing half left, sacrificing holding patera in right hand over lighted altar, a club or cypress in his left hand. A recumbent bull sits behind the altar, star in left field. References: RIC IV 88b, RSC 61, BMCRE 212 And finally, here is a well-worn Drusus Jr (I had no clue who he was prior to seeing this coin) bronze with brown-green patina (not powdery, though... should I be worried?): Drusus Caesar, son of Tiberius, AE As, Rome Mint, Struck 22-23 AD. Obverse: DRVSVS CAESAR TI AVG F DIVI AVG N, bare head left. Reverse: PONTIF TRIBVN POTEST ITER around large SC. References: RIC I 45 (Tiberius), BMCRE 99, Cohen 2, RCV 1794 What coins have you gotten recently that haven't appeared on CT yet?
Nice pick-ups @Justin Lee ! Agreed with Der Bingle, your Maximianus is great! I recently snared this one from @Mat ... kinda sentimental... raised sheep as a kid, and had 50 head of them on the farm I lived on when I expatted in the UK. Kids had a great time growing up there. RR L Rustius 76 BCE AR Den 19mm 3.6g Mars SC Rome - Ram L RVSTI Cr 389-1 Sear 320 The ram looks a lot like Chappie (our ram) when I was growing up ('cept we docked his tail.)
Thanks. What makes this coin even better is I bought a lot of coins with the intention of selling them all but this one. I made a profit off the others so this one was more than free. Yes, it was like I was paid to take it. Now that's a bargain.
Nice ad hoc buys! I especially like the Africa type, though I always wish they done the lion in a more lion-ey style. For Maximianus: For Maxentius:
Nice, @Justin Lee ! I like the Elagabalus! Hmm. What haven't I ever posted? How about this Gallienus zoo coin with one of the flying horses of Apollo? Gallienus, 253-268 AD. Roman Æ Antoninianus, 19 mm, 2.81 g. Rome Mint 267-268 AD. Obv: GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right. Rev: SOLI CONS AVG, winged horse right, springing heavenward, A in exergue. Refs: RIC 283K; Göbl 712b; Cohen 979; RCV 10362; Hunter 127.
Here's another one @Roman Collector - I also like that Africa type reverse - don't think I've ever seen one!
