You did the right thing by posting this. You should also tell other local coin collectors you might know. I would also suggest writing a letter to the shop as well as to the local paper.
I have had bad experiences in coin shops too. One day I found a coin shop (that I had never been to before) and stopped in (on a workday) - just to browse around - I would have bought something if it caught my eye. There were three employees, none wanted to talk to me, or show me anything in the cases. Someone they knew walked in and they started talking ignoring me altogether, This is kind of strange since I am a lawyer, was wearing a suit, and if nothing else, looked like I had money.
I have found a good dealer, who knows me by name, has copies of my want lists, and knows what types of coins I collect and calls me on the cell phone if he sees something I may be interested in. He even sets aside coins and gives me a "first look" before he puts them in a showcase.
Moral of the story - don't get discouraged - keep looking there are some good dealers out there. Also go to local coin shows - you can browse until your harts content.

This is just goofy. ARE YOU GUYS EXPECTING A "WELCOMING ASSOCIATE" like at Walmart when you come into a Coin shop?

Today, I went to my "local coin dealer". I was asking about the Dansco 7100 1-pocket pages and he was just so friendly and helpful. Couldn't have been more nice. As was posted on another thread, I don't think they exist, but he is going to contact his wholesaler and will contact me after Christmas.

    THIS SOUNDS STUPID,
BUT IF YOU DON'T LIKE A STORE, DON'T GO TO IT.................DUH!~

Man, I don't have the number of places that you have!!!!

    Paul-
Please tell all of your friends and fellow collectors about this kind of treatment so that they will stay away from the store. Every customer is due common courtesy in every situation, and yes, I do expect a greeter at every store I shop at! If I grace a store with my presence, the least they can do is greet me politely and offer help. I will trash a store's reputation in a heartbeat if they don't measure up.
By the way, I have owned two retail stores in the past and now run three more for someone else. I just finished my 58th hour in 4 days and EVERYONE was treated equally and with respect even though we are all bone tired. By costing this jerk his living, perhaps he will learn to be courteous, or else be unemployed like he belongs. If I ever had an employee speak to a customer in that way, he would be out the door instantly and would get negative references forever. So get to it and tell everyone you know. I say that as a professional manager, and trust me, it works!
    Keep collecting- Mike

Why not discuss this matter, he was poorly treated, and we should stand up for our YN's.
If a particular thread bothers you, click onto the next one, that is what I do.
But, this is a mtter that should be addressed.
There are lousy individuals out there, just as we addressed with Frank's situation earlier, and how is ebay different form a brick & mortar store?

Post his address and I'll invest in a stamp to write a letter, and if anyone dosen't have a stamp I'll sned you one.
Perhaps if they get a bunch of letters they'll learn to act like human beings.
However, I REALLY like the letters to the editor idea.

    Go for it.

Yeah, but my thought is if they can't like me for me, and only want to wait on me for my money, then is it really worth it? I want a dealer that will respect me like a collector, not a kid. There is another dealer in my area that tells me of coin shows and everything, really informative and helpful. My thought is, go to him, my money will be better spent. When I go to a coin shop, I not only look for coins, I look for respect. Just me. :D

PAul, is there shop open on weekends? I might give them a call today. :D

    Phoenix

Tell them you're looking for slabbed MS62-63 Morgans. Could be interesting.

I'll bet they're nice as they won't be able to see a "punk" like you. I mean that in a good way Phoenix!

Something for YN's to consider before you visit your next shop or show: most dealers really like working with YN's because they ARE our future collectors but are hesistant to buy from or sell to YN's especially expensive coins because they are under 18.

I believe having a parent or guardian visit with you on your first visit, meet the dealer, explain they KNOW you are collecting, buying, selling, trading, etc., is all ok because after all, you ARE a minor, may smooth out future visits to that shop. It makes the Dealer feel more comfortable working with you.

I believe most YN's, especially on forums like this, are honest and truly interested in the hobby.

But there are so many young people out there who have just, well, 'taken' their parents collections to sell for cash to buy other things, or taken their parents 'cash' without permission to buy coins, and an honest dealer with integrity is looking out for the well being of all.

And yes, there are ON's (old numismatists) out there who have done the same (taken w/o asking) ~ I'm not saying it's just the YNs.

This is just one of the way dealers 'try' to make sure YN's are on the right path ~ collecting by being informed, buying what they can truly afford, etc. I truly believe you'll be treated with more respect if you do take a guardian with you on your first trip.

    Happy collecting.

If there is no other customers, you're damn right I do.

If I would have been in a bad mood and Chip treated me that way, I may very well rip his throat out.

If someone treats me like a punk, I tend to offer to just show them what kind of punk they have on their hands.

Try wearing a Harley shirt to a coin show and see what kind of response you get when your not known. I have mentioned this before in CT.

I did tell one dealer that I paid more for my bike than what his entire display was worth. : )

I've seen guys get ignored for that.
The culture has changed and dealers have to get with the times.
There are many doctors and lawyers that wear Harley apparel on weekends.
Actually, there is a doctor in my town that wears Harley and flannel shirts to work.
    :D

  19. Treashunt

    Treashunt The Other Frank

I am an accountant who is allergic to ties & suits.
It happened to me at a show, once, and I pulled out a wad from my pocket and told the dealer to choke himself.
Never happened again, and I never went to that dealer again, to this day I am sure that he doesn't know why I spend a bunch at each show at the nearby table and walk right by him.
I don't care what he has, or his prices.
Another dealer was nasty to a young kid (or YN), I told him off and told everyone that I knew about what he had done. Now, NONE of us will visit his table-- except to whisper and laugh. And then move on. (Drives him nuts.)

    Lmao!

Oh, so did anyone give them a cal yet? I heard from another board that some kid was leaving profanity-full messages. I don't think Chip blamed me for it, which is good I guess, because it wasn't. But if anyone calls, let me know please =p

Paul, do you know if they sell on Ebay ?
I want to make sure to keep an eye out, if they do.

    Nevermind, Paul.
    I found them.
    Another one to avoid.
