    Greased filled die or possibly something on the coin! Use nail polish remover and a Q-TIP on it !

    Maybe the Mint Employee running the printing machine made a mistake and used a letter I instead of an L when placing the letters onto the Dye

    Just kidding.. it looks like damage to the L.. if you enlarge the picture you can clearly see that it has a faint little stem that an L has.
