I used to specialise in the coins of Probus. In fact it could have been considered hoarding as I seemed to but just about any probus coin that I could lay my hands on. Over time I tried to be more discerning and now my Probus addiction is down to just a few coins a year rather than a dozen a week as it once was. This is my first Probus of the year. Probus Antonianus Obv:–VIRTVS PROBI AVG, Radiate, cuirassed bust left, with spear Rev:– PROVIDENT AVG, Providentia standing left, holding globe and sceptre Minted in Siscia (_ | Q / XXI). 7th emission, A.D. 280 Reference:– RIC 722 var. (Unlisted bust type in RIC). This bust type is unlisted in Alföldi on for Table XXVIII, Type 53 as is this officina. As such it would appear to be quite a scarce coin. 3.93 gms.21.61 mm. 180 degrees. Martin
Nice new Probus....and thanks for leaving some Probus coins for the rest of us. I know I certainly appreciate it. Here is my one and only Probus.
Here is a Probie oh, wait, sorry...wrong one... RI Probus 276-282 CE Ant 21mm captive on ground Riding Horse RI Probus Æ Ant 22mm 3.75g 280CE CLEMENTIA TEMP XXI Emperor receiving Victory from Jupiter UNKNOWN EASTERN MINT - fight Saturninus
Although I love the history and coinage of the Roman Third Century of Crisis, I always need a quick review of the events: (A couple guests. Not my pictures, however.)
Hey, yeah...you're really cutting down on the Prubus coins Martin! This is a nice looking Probus I haven't posted for a while... How many other "not in RIC" Probus do you have? My selection: What "gotta have it" am I missing, do you figure?
Nice coins all. @chrsmat71 Very nice. It also comes with the spelling error ORIES. @Nathan401 Your obverse is incorrect on the first coin. It should be a Lugdunum bust. DOes it look like this? @Severus Alexander So left to right you have Ticinum, Lugdunum, Rome, Siscia and Unknown eastern mint (only recently recognised). A mint set would leave you needing Cyzicus, Serdica, Antioch and Ticinum. Alternatively you could look for the rest of the matching set to go with your Rome mint example which is part of the coded AEQVITI series.
Nice. The first two are from the first issue at Rome and the 3rd coin is from the coded series at Ticinum.
