I found a couple of these... Is this a CUD? If not what is it? the coins i found it on are all the same, same location on the coin same size of error so forth... Is not supposed to be on the coin. Once everyone can come conclusion i will post what coin. Thank you in advance.
I hope so... It is raised, it is in the field and it does not belong on the coin. I am leaning toward CUD but i am not an expert... Plus the coins i have found it on are all the same.
Is this a Die chip? Maybe i misunderstand what a die chip is, but i thought those did not happen in the middle of the clean field.
Could be anything that removed a little metal from the die. Medal failure, a tiny gouge mark, tiny left over clash mark, or just sloppy mint work.
I think it's a test punch to check the hardness of the die. The metal in a die is soft so it can receive an impression from the hub. Once it's pressed, the die is heat treated to harden it. There are specific tests used to check the hardness which use an indenter that pushes into the metal. IMO, this could be a test punch.
Good idea, but when i looked them up the marks are not the same. Would be a cool variety though. I am back to die chip.
Yet there have been a number of posts to this very thread from folks both trying to help and willing to play your little game. Go figure. There's nothing wrong with fun-type threads, but there can be a thin line between fun and nonsense. Case in point.
The guessing game is cool if YOU actually know the answer, if you're asking for help to identify an anomaly on your coin I think it's best that you post a full pic of the coin. Anomalies can depend on location, type of coin, denomination, etc. I can't imagine you getting a legitimate answer when you're not providing as much info as you can to help the people you're asking for opinions.
