I've been stuck on the Austro-Hungarian corona (1892-1916) for a while now. Between having few big keys and semi-keys in that date range, as well as two commemoratives (one offered to collectors in 1896 with a variety of presentation cases), two issues restruck in the 1960s, proofs, proof-like strikes, and plenty of patterns, it's a short series that I found has quite a lot to offer.

I find it exciting since besides looking to fill the few holes I have left in the date set, there are many wildly-toned examples available as well (like the 1915 MS66 I have as my avatar).

Is there anything more beautiful than the stars of a Barber Half Dollar?

I've been pretty smitten for a while by large bronze provincials like this:

    30 mm in diameter!

Also I have a fondness for big pieces of ancient silver:

    This one is also 30mm

Too bad my coin budget has pooped the bed...

I like all AV coinage, except the really modern stuff. In 2018 I got one of my "dream" coins. From Spink/USA Auction:) 339_61_1 (1).jpg
a perfect FDC prooflike AV 4 Dukaten 1848-A Vienna Mint
Emperor Ferdinand V of Austro-Hungarian Empire
Sadly in my case, most of my dreamy coins I cannot afford:(

I just purchased one of these in an estate sale online auction. I'm just curious if you remember how much your grandfather paid for them in the 70s. I want to know the original issue price.

I did some research. Looks as if they were placed up for bids starting at $30. When they all didn't sell out the first auction, the government ran about 5 more. They still didn't sell out, so in 1980, the government tried one more time, listing them at three different prices of $15, $30 and $60. However, this is when the silver price spiked, so all 900,000+ left in the treasury vaults sold out easily. These are worth a minimum of $195 now from what I can tell.

German States coins have great designs... $350-1,000+ probably out of your price range but worth a look.

I like the griffins on this German States/Baden thaler. $371.00

Here's a recent dark side purchase I just couldn't pass up. So many of these were cleaned and scrubbed and beat up but this one is a 64 that looks nice for the grade.

IHC proofs have my attention at the moment. I'm not a set person but that is one set I can see myself tackling over the long haul
