eBay has a huge selection. Dealer sites, heritage, David Lawrence, legend is great too if you are looking for expensive coins, stacks. Basically online

eBay is fine there’s very strong buyer protection much more so than other places actually. Just stick to the graded coins from PCGS, NGC, ICG, ANACS snd you’ll avoid the overwhelming majority of problems. It’ll be by far your best source for lower value coins too assuming you aren’t looking to jump right into the deep end.

Ebay is like a giant flea market, there are some sellers with overpriced garbage, or even counterfeit garbage, but they are a small minority. Most sellers on there are honest sellers with decent items, you just have to educate yourself and make good buying decisions.

Littleton Coin probably isn't the best value for coins, they're coin prices are sometimes double what you'd pay on eBay. I will say however they're a decent source for supplies. Their albums and folders are pretty nice and not nearly as exorbitantly priced as their coins. I try to support them at least a little bit because they started as a small town "mom and pop" business and it's 4 miles from my house. I'm also a former employee.

I can't speak on the US Mint as I've never purchased direct from them.

eBay has amazing buyer protection. You can easily get a refund/return for any reason there. I get most of my coins from eBay. There's some other good ones, but eBay is my favorite.

I'd stay away from Littleton, theres alot of misinformation, exaggeraton, and their prices are suprisingly higher than the actual value (Some of their coins are selling for 4x more than they are worth).

I think Littleton does that thing where they send you coins and you have to mail them back or buy them. What a nightmare if this is their practice. I've found great buys at flea markets but i wouldnt recommend these places to a newbie. I've learned the hard way a few times, but after reading over a dozen books in the beginning I'm sure i avoided a lot of trouble. I'd recommend at least two beginner guides to coin collecting, like something you'd find at barnes and noble. Ebay is my online go-to place, but like flea markets, you need knowledge first about what you're doing

Because of their practices, I'd never buy from their web site. I'm glad you got those books. The red book is essential

    V. Kurt Bellman Yes, I'm blunt! Get over your "feeeeelings".

The answer to your question depends on where you live. Where I live, almost the ONLY worthwhile places to buy are coin clubs and dedicated coin auctions.

Sounds like you have wide interests. When you say gold and silver, do you mean coins that were historically made from those metals, or bullion coins? For me, the most satisfying way to collect when I started was to pick one type of coin and learn a lot about it; collect that series, then move on when it was complete or I tired of it. But some people prefer to dabble in lots of things. Exploring these boards has taught me a lot; some dealers have regular blogs too that are educational (Gerry Fortin Rare Coinsis one I like).

Getting to a coin shop or show is best since you can see the coins in hand. Nothing better than that.
