The first time I read the Odyssey I was in 5th or 6th grade in elementary school, reading a kids version in English. The book had a pic for that "between the evils" crossing which showed a wicked multi-headed monster for Scylla, and that image has shaped my imagination for that figure ever since. Too bad, because the actual ancient Greek rendering is more interesting to the adult mind, I think. Thanks for digging into it.
Not something I would usually collect....can't understand why I bought it!!! SICILY Himera. Ca. 420-407 BC. AE hemilitra Rev
This Probus arrived today. A nice example of one of those elaborate portraits of Probus in full fighting gear was on my to-acquire list for some time and now it's here! Probus, antoninianus/Aurelianus, Rome mint, R-star-sigma in exergue. RIC 157, Cohen 37. Weight 3.35 grams.
Isn't it? I wonder how so many late third century coins have stayed this nice for so long compared to earlier ones. Is it the silver content? And they're so affordable too..
