Hi, I see that someone else has a silver penny, minded is a 1999 silver penny, I was just wondering if that person ever found out more about it or is there anyone out there know more about it ? I never seen a penny like this, I'm 74 years old and I thought I seen it all until NOW. So can anyone out there HELP ME !!!!! thanks
It was either plated or it had the Copper plating stripped off. Sorry but there are no 1999 Silver Cents.
Paddy is correct. Not at all uncommon to run across these. The get plated to go in jewelry or perhaps even part of a science experiment. I have two of them.
Only way to know if it is like that "clean through" would be to cut it in two. Did you do that? And if it actually was silver it would weigh about 3.66 grams. Weigh yous and I'll but it is pretty close to 2.5 grams.
Ways in at 3.1 And I'm not that crazy to cut it in half. Google can tell people like u all about it, try looking it up just put in Google , SILVER PENNYS and to your eyes there IT IS , Happy days are hear again .
3.1 grams for a 1990 cent does have some potential for being something interesting. Still to low for being silver, but it does seem abnormal. About the right weight for being made of nickel (not a nickel five cent planchet) Is it magnetic? If so STONGLY magnetic or weakly magnetic?
And what you get is almost completely about 1943 steel cents (2.5 to 2.7 grams), plated cents, Or hammered english silver pennies pre 1600.
Wow son"e don't u have nothing better to do, But go back in fourth with a old man. U have a very boring life.
Sir I'm pushing 80 years old. If I'm wrong I'm wrong, But in this case IM RIGHT. I just warm my milk back up and I'm going back to bed , Go have words with someone else Ok Someone else who Cares because I DONT. GOOD NIGHT.
@159miller First of all, welcome to coin talk. Being new, you probably don't know the players yet, but you received responses from some very knowledgeable and credible numismatists. Coin Talk gets numerous posts from people having silver cents. In nearly every instance, they are plated. Plating Cents has been used for over 60 as an experiment in School Chemistry Labs. It's a great teaching tool and the student gets to take home his/her experiment. Frequently these experiments end up in circulation. Here is a link if you want to make some yourself https://www.sciencecompany.com/Turn-Copper-Pennies-Into-Silver-and-Gold-Pennies.aspx You really need to post a clear picture of both the front and reverse. There are a number of extremely knowledgeable numismatists on CT If you have something other than a plated cent, they will let you know, however, don't get your hopes up. Hope this helps
You mean my penny isn't gold? At least it's not a small date. It looks much nicer in hand, I will try for a better photo.
Of course, other than the science experiments, one can always BUY silver or gold plated aftermarket pennies and other denominations. Those always make it into circulation too once the buyer finds out they are only worth face value. Nothing rare, just a science experiment in mass-market mode.
