Son Finds Fathers Collection

I would think that this individual would do much better to hang onto his Dad's collection. It seems like the Father may have wanted to create an heirloom for the many generations to come. But we all know, eventually one of the family members would sell off the coins . Unless you have the passion needed to enjoy, and see the beauty and creativity in coins, they are nothing more then metal disks with a value. Sadly so many families get ripped off by some body making a fast buck, and are less then honest with the holder of quality items. Even if a seller offered to act as a middle man to set up the auctions , get the items certified and take say 10 to 15 % for their work. This way they can work with the owners , and everything is in black and white. I seen this happen on more then a few occasions when Grandma or Grandpas collection is sold for 500.00 dollars and worth 10 times that amount. The nice think about Coin Talk is there are many reputable people that could step in to help a family in a situation such as the one mentioned.

Alzheimer’s is a tragic situation. He’ll be very lucky if he even recovers a fraction of his father’s coin collection.

The article said they had a foreign substance removed from the high points. Perhaps one or more would not have straight graded at the other companies or received a lower grade.

Perhaps more of a reason to get help with the issues the person is dealing with. Someone honest that would help the individual make good choices for themselves? Just a thought . I like to see people be treated with respect , and get as much as possible when, and if deciding to sell off important coins.

One more story reminding me why my collection will be sold while I am still alive. It's truly a burden to pass a collection down to heirs unless you know for a fact they will appreciate it ala @Kirkuleez. My children, they can buy it at auction if they want it...

Kind thoughts but my mother suffered from a horrible dementia. She did not want help, did not need help and would let you know that as profanely as possible. As one could expect, the relatives living closest to her cleaned her out.

    V. Kurt Bellman Yes, I'm blunt! Get over your "feeeeelings".

All the more reason to go to NGC, then.

Ah, every US collector's nightmare... spend your life crafting a beautiful collection only for your kid to sell it all and join the dark side!:hilarious: *dodges denarius culls being thrown* (just kidding, I love ancients too.)

I hope my kiddo carries the torch. We'll see, but so far so good. The pious reverence she observes when holding her birthyear ASE is pretty awesome to behold. :)

You know you made a good metal detecting find when you are measuring your haul of 1870 proof sets and Morgan's by the pound.

Ugh. I'm sorry to hear that. My Grandmother is in a facility and doesn't really know what's happening around her. It's very sad.

I also think that this will become a discussion in our home as well. Ask the kids if they want the collection or would they rather have some cash equal to the value to their share. I think that there will be 2 that are interested in them, and 1 grandson has taking a liking in them. The girls do not seem that interested at this time , but they are interested in cash, I know that much. I have instilled that you achieve items that you like by working hard, and then first look after the important life issues. Then use a portion of what you have left for your social activities and hobbies. That part becomes after a certain amount of what you have left after the largest portion goes into a savings plan of some type, no matter if it is 20 dollars or 1000 dollars. How has it been working so far? For the most not bad , the toughest for the younger people today is the cost of living is a lot higher then it was for me growing up. So the savings part sometimes becomes the socialization , but they are doing well. This is an issue we are going to get settled really soon, as we all know, here today gone tomorrow. I really would like to see the coins carry on as an heirloom for years to come. A dream, most likely, but not impossible if you write up a story to go along with your collection about how the passion for coins has given me tremendous joy and frustration at times. Most importantly letting everyone know how much these have meant to you during your collecting days. Just my point of view on this important subject. Pleas let me know if you think there is a better way ,or if you can see what you think is a mistake on my part. I appreciate and respect the view of the members of this fine forum . I don't believe anything about this story. Seems like a staged promotion. Those coins didn't survive decades in the ground in an unsealed holder unharmed, don't believe that for a second. Nor do I believe that anyone could look at the market today and follow the path he chose for sale.

This. On high end coins is not just more, its MUCH more.

    PCGS and NGC have conservation.

I thought the same thing about this story and the condition of the shown buried coins. Considering the geographic location the soil goes through various moisture and freeze thaw cycles. It seems far fetched to think that coins buried under these conditions would come out unscathed.

Completely agree especially in that type of holder. Nothing about this story adds up. The son is supposedly a collector (granted of a different nature) but that would make him perfectly capable of being able to figure out what the coins are worth. This doesn't add up at all
