I purchased this unattributed 1937 DDO Buffalo Nickel. I didn't realize it was a DDO until @Paddy54 brought it to my attention. Can the community please confirm whether my coin is the DDO-001 or DDO-002 variety? The main reason I'm asking is because the "L" in LIBERTY doesn’t appear to match either DDO variety when comparing the plates. Below are the links to the TrueView image and the Variety Vista page. Thanks! TV: http://images.PCGS.com/TrueView/34020758 VV: www.varietyvista.com/03%20Buffalo%20Nickels/DDO%201937.htm
You have the coin in hand are you seeing any of the die markers associated with either DDO? I also am seeing some of #2. Just to let you know the images on VV are of an early die state A. The L would look different in a later die state, or stage B or C
I originally excluded DDO-002 because the lower portion of the “E” in LIBERTY on my coin is lacking that sharp spike. However, I didn’t think about my coin being produced from a later die state, so maybe that’s why I’m having trouble matching it to either definitively. So far, I have just relied on the full-sized TV image. I’m planning to get a digital microscope soon, though.
OP . Your coin is a earlier die state then coneca ( stage B ) . Look at the characteristics of the " B " & " R " of LIBERTY . Especially the inside characteristics of the inside loops . Now match that to their site .
Ahhh... Now I see it. I rotated the TV image to match the Coneca images. I also see in the TrueView what looks like the remnant of a spike on the lower portion of the "E". I certainly didn't doubt you. I just had to finally see it for myself. Also, it looks like there is something behind the "B". Do you see it?
