Looks like Environmental Damage. The elements have affected the Nickel. If it were struck on a Copper Cent Planchet it would be smaller in diameter and thinner as a Cent. The smell it has?.. Can't do that over the internet!
@ paddyman, same post i saw you made on another with the same question (post a pic everyone said) so i decided to post a pic of the one i got a couple months ago hoping to find an answer. 'Can't smell over the internet', I realize that. That's why is said it. So if it does smell like a penny and looks like a penny but is a nickel, what is it? Did they make some nickels with copper in them and that is the reason for the smell and color? Nice collection btw. And its not dirty egg, see pic again.
Environmental Damage is a nice way of stating it is dirty. When Nickels are buried for long periods of time the metal color is affected by Dirt, soil, sand and weather. Nickel contains some copper which is one of the reasons it turns darker... again, you don't have Mint Error
Sweet. Thanks for the info guys. That's why I joined the site. Info! US nickels are 75% copper. 1955 copper nickel would be smaller diameter than a nickel. "Environmental Damage is a nice way of stating it is dirty" hmmm.... seems the other way around, but good to know. I just want to know if I post coins on this site it wont just be belittled. A lot of post I have read are not informative at all and more of a "mine is better than your's" kinda thing. New to this would like a forum to know what I am looking at.
