Maybe a vintage lacquer job or a more recent Vaseline rub > speaking of vintage, here's an old post on another forum from our newest moderator about copper coin enhancements: https://forums.collectors.com/discu...without-affecting-their-color-by-lordmarcovan
I would imagine that the appearance could be just the photos, and not the coin. @C-B-D can't wait to see the slab Photos.
Maybe they all look alike because you forgot you already guessed the grade of this coin on Feb.25th. "Not sure if it makes XF." Sound familiar? And no, I don't paint coins. Maybe you're trying to be funny, I don't know, but you're wrong.
So which is it, Cheech? VF35 or AU53? You made 2 guesses.... sounds like Ed Wood has a new alias. LOL!
A member who had a pattern of guessing a grade, then changing it after everyone chimed in. OR he would wait till the grade posted, then make his "guess" and pretend he didn't see it. He also got busted for telling big lies to try and impress.
Wait, you mean to tell me the elaborate plans for a state-of-the-art bathroom-less coin grading facility in Aruba were all just a red herring?!?!?!
Wow. They give an MS grade for missing wheat lines? Maybe just for that year due to poor strikes? I never knew they would grade it that high. Learn something every day. Nice coin by the way!
This coin was struck very weakly from worn, tired dies. It was given an MS grade because it shows no signs of wear. Look at some Buffalo Nickels from the teens and twenties with mint mark, particularly dates like 1926-D and 1923-S. They are often terribly struck and you can sometimes cherrypick an undergraded example off a dealer who goes by ANA grading standards. (This includes semi-keys like 21-S, 24-S, and 26-S! These dates are conditionally scarce and get very valuable in VF and higher grades!)
I missed this thread the first time around, and I'm glad someone linked to it. I hope someone else will find it as educational as I have.
'ANA grading standards' is another term I didn't realize in that I didn't know there were different standards. I really need to tire myself and read some boring pertinent information. I just find it so tedious as probably many others do too. I guess I need to 'waste' the time versus more pleasurable reading on the subject. Thank you!
