Image below came from the "showcase" thread here on CT. As a kid this was a magical coin to me even though I have never owned one. Just now looking at this image the thought occurs to me. Considering the dramatic doubling that exists on this well storied cent.... Why would Lincolns portrait not show any doubling at all?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1955_doubled_die_cent Quote "Due to the manner in which this hubbing was carried out, it most noticeably affected the date and inscriptions, with very little doubling (albeit noticeable loss of detail) visible on the bust of Lincoln.".. Closed quote
I've got a better one for you. Why does the 1939 nickel DDR only show on "FIVE CENTS" and "MONTICELLO" and nowhere else? No part of the building, no other lettering.
It is a class IV doubled die and a class VIII The class three shows mostly on the central devices, The doubling is mostly noticed on those devices but ALL ARE doubled. I will add the Variety Vista reference and you can see that it is not just the Five Cents and Monticello. http://varietyvista.com/04a JN DD Vol 1/1939PDDR001.htm And here is the different class's of doubling provided by Error ref. http://www.error-ref.com/doubled-dies/
@Randy Abercrombie, it's simple geometry. Given any degree of rotation, the angle is showing its widest at the perimeter. The portrait is doubled, too, but the angle is the less apparent the nearer to the center. Does that make sense? It does to this horse.
There's a '72 on eBay being auctioned off and has had several bids on it but it just doesn't look kosher to me even though it's "guaranteed to be authentic". While I'm far from an expert on these, the color and texture just don't look right and there might be more? Here is the link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1972-72-1C...508578&hash=item3b0cdbc4a3:g:Q1AAAOSw2QJa9zqM Is it just me or does anyone else see anything off about this??? Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack this thread but it does kinda go along with the topic.
Ooooow. Thats a good one. Guessing they tried you use old die and just tried to clean up that smaller type
