Hi everyone, I came across this strange looking penny today and am hoping to gain some insight as to what is going on with it. It's almost like a top layer of the coin is peeling off but upon closer inspection it almost appears to be thin letter type characters smashed across in a line. I'm not all that familiar with the mint process yet and if that is even possible, but would greatly appreciate some input. It's probably PMD and my eyes are playing tricks on me, but I've been going through a lot of pennies lately and haven't came across anything like this yet. Thanks!
Thanks for the info furryfrog02, I'm trying to learn the ins and outs of this new hobby I've started. I think I've got the whole doubled die vs MD and DDD thing down now and I'm learning about lamination thanks to your reply. So do you think this is worth throwing in a cardboard 2x2 to add to my collection or should I throw it in with the rest of my pre-1982 copper pennies?
I've run across a few more severe lams in my searches...but I haven't run into a lot of lams. If it were me, I'd probably toss it into a 2x2 or at least into my tube of odds and ends. I don't think it's worth much more than that. Still a fun find
Thanks, I'm using a jewelers loupe to identify the suspects and then taking them to trial with a cheap eFlex MM-840 usb microscope lol. Hopefully soon I can identify some rarities, if I don't it won't be for lack of effort!
