So basically you think it is OK to run a scam, sell badly graded coins if the BUYER is dumb enough to LISTEN to a salesman tell half truths, lies about a coin... Obviously you are part of said scam, or just want to play "BAD REPUBLICAN" as the NORM. It is ok to be a scumbag if the Good people fall for it... That making money this way is a GOOD sales technique quality that the salesman had to get the SUCKER to buy... In fact, I got some coins the other day from the ads off of here, WCD and got the upsale phone call, listened to him to find out what the pitch is. Sure enough, buy graded coins from them, signed buffalo at a ridiculous price. Thus, they get no more sales from me...
I don't think that's what she's saying at all ! I read her comments quite differently. I don't see where she is condoning the actions of the bad guy in the least. To me, she is merely pointing that you cannot protect people from themselves. And, people are ALWAYS, ALWAYS responsible for their own actions. The first rule of buying coins is and always should be - if you do not know what you are doing, then don't do it ! And if you cannot conform to the first rule then you simply must conform to the second rule - only buy coins from trusted and respected dealers. And if you don't conform to either one, then yeah, you deserve what ya get because YOU are responsible for your own actions - nobody else ! Ya see, the bad guy may be at fault, but so are you.
I'd like to add an additional example of what I'm saying here. You walk out of the grocery store or Walmart. And on your way to the car you see this guy standing at his trunk selling watches - you have to walk right past him. As you do, he says - hey buddy wanna buy a Rolex really cheap ? You walk over, look at them and buy one. Is it not your own fault for doing that ? If you can answer anything else but YES to that question - well, I rest my case.
Yes, People are responsible for their actions. We have always known that, and in this country people could count on their leaders to provide honest assessment, rules and regulations that prevented weak minded or feeble individuals from this type of thing. More and more people today have the opinion of OH well, not my problem... I am smart and need not worry about being scammed, or lied too. The heck with everyone else. This has led to guys like the Ramano Bros. being able to set up shop, get away with making millions and then a slap on the wrist (most of the time). And if you have enough money, you can just call out an opposite opinion as your defense and get away with it. This is ruining our country, our morals... We should all remember that not everyone is as smart as you, I or others on this forum, on the internet... Also, as people get older, their minds fade away, we are too protect those people as the younger version of the same person. What if you don't have children, relatives or even close friends. Should the Gov't, police, NTSA, NSA, FBI, etc. protect us from ourselves ? Yes, they should....
Oh goodness. That is quite the mouthful. For a fella that’s been around long enough to remember not having the Fed in all my business, I rather miss those days. In fact just yesterday I received a letter from the federal census bureau telling me my business had to participate in a survey. I paid an employee to do a four hour survey for the Fed! Now I go great lengths to stay out of the government spotlight. I rather like it that way...... You know about 250 years ago a group of folks started this country with a prime objective of keeping the governments nose out of our business. I rather believe they had the right idea.
The one technological advance that had the potential of lifting small business to the same footing as Corporate America has been twisted and contorted by our bureaucratic Federal and State governments into an albatross. Time and time again their attitude has been "Everybody has a personal computer - with just the push of a button it can compile this information for them easy peasy." This has been going on for the last 45 years. Now all a business owner does is spend all their time producing reports for the government or spending significant would be profit paying someone else to produce these reports for them. How did our government even function prior to 1982 void of all this information they now require we provide them?
Brian, you can't protect people from themselves, it is an effort in futility. It simply cannot be done. I've spent 16 years trying to help educate people about coins on this forum alone, and quite a few more years on other forums. I've spent 30 years trying to teach hundreds of people about coins on an individual basis, one on one, and help them with their collections. And still they make bad choices from time to time. The best you can hope for is to give them information and knowledge. But in the end - they have to be the ones to use it ! And if they choose not to - there's nothing you, me, the govt, or anybody else can do about it. Nobody, absolutely nobody, can ever take advantage of you unless you yourself allow them to do so ! And that's the bottom line.
Yes, it is our responsibility for any decision we make, but if something is sold under false pretenses the other party has some responsibility. To what degree can only be generally determined by others. An example is the current insurance industry that is virtually unregulated. Typical examples are that you are required to have a personal liability policy to drive a car, but at least in our state that isn't a possibility. You can only buy a auto policy, and must have one for every vehicle. I have a "fleet" of cars, cycles, etc. and must have a liability policy for every individual vehicle, even though I don't "carry" collision, etc. as we have a "no fault" state where the insurer can claim equal responsibility. I have a perfect driving record without any accidents and just one ticket many years ago, but have policies on many generally undriven vehicles. I have never had any surgery other than my tonsils removed because my mother wanted/ordered that. Never had a doctor until recent federal legislation required a policy for same, and I was mandated to pay a 5 figure sum the initial year. I had lightning strike my home causing an explosion/fire, destroying virtually all electronic devices through-out my property including field mounted cameras, buried wiring, etc.. My insurer of more than 40 years supplying all my insurance denied my claim unless I could submit a quote from a singular company for all of the repairs, which no one would do. I paid a distant contractor to supply a quote for a portion of my security system replacement, which was rejected, and I paid for the repairs to prove that the insurer was fraudulent. The insurer stalled for 2 years until legal statute of limitations elapsed. The insurer then cancelled all insurance policies. State Farm had quadrupled their profits the previous year through claims denial. More than 50 years ago I purchased a whole life policy on my wife and son, paying through today, where my ex-wife is now dying of cancer, and I've been told by the AG and CC departments that I, the "policy holder" initiating/paying all funds in the amount of a 5 figure sum, can't contact the insurer because the policies were sold/assigned to an unknown firm, who has disallowed my "owner" and beneficiary position. The CC (commerce commission) was awarded several hundred million dollars in a class action lawsuit against insurers for denial of Life Insurance policy due payments, but generally refuse private individual support. I could easily write a treatise on these, many others, justification for our states "bullion" legislation, and other "class" legislation required. I've done my part to implement action, and warn others of the perceived client injustices, but you are correct, we citizens are partially responsible. YES JMHO
Nobody denies that, least of all me ! But denying your own responsibility, saying something like - it's all his fault ! - and that's what many people do - well, it simply isn't all his fault. That's all I'm saying.
