So the results of this were very interesting. EVERYONE here agreed that they thought coin #2 was an MS-66. When in fact EVERYONE got it wrong, with the technical exception of @TypeCoin971793 who would have guessed that #2 was a MS-65. That is until he changed it due to the rules of at least one coin being a 66.

Coin #2 is actually a recently graded PCGS MS-65 I bought at the PNNA show back in March. All the other coins are MS-66's that I pulled off of PCGS CoinFacts. I reshot #2 to try and match the lighting of the PCGS coins, but there was a very subtle hint that it was not like the rest. If you look closely, you'll see the prongs on the edges of the coin. The TrueViews do not have the prongs as they are shot raw.

This was a very small sample size to run an experiment, but I think it get's my thoughts across. PCGS has started to tighten up on their grading standards at least on a few series. Could it be that 20 years down the road, we will look back on the "Old Blue Label with QR Code on the back" as a desirable holder? Same way we view "Rattlers" and "OGH's"? I've bought a couple Morgans in the newer holders that have been graded recently and both of them have felt undergraded by at least a point.

Anyway, I thank you all for your participation. I honestly did not expect to get the results that I got.

I agree with you that there are opportunities to pick out some nice coins in this latest generation of holders.

However, I do not think this holder will be remembered fondly. This is the generation in which I have seen the most QC/AT material (that straight graded-take a look at all the questionable Silver Eagles) as well as some over-graded material. This holder (known as Gen 6.0) has been around since May 2015 and has seen a lot of coins. I believe the 2016-2017 period saw PCGS loosen their standards a bit and now they are being more conservative.

True. I didn't quite think it through all the way. But, not too long ago, I would not give much attention to the coins in newer holders. My mind has since been changed.

I actually thought coin #1 had the nicest cheek. Idk that 3 & 4 are deserving of the 66 grade.

I have no idea what grey sheet is on a '21 Morgan.

 

I dont have a current grey sheet either, but they (iirc) were pretty close in price to the other common date Morgans. So like $125

My personal thoughts the first 66 has some deeper fields and frostier devices. They are technically graded and looked at differently. I thought the second coin did a good job of rivaling it. The third and fourth I think they should be sold as 65's in comparison. To many bag marks and distractions

 

It looked like many thought 66,66,65,65 were their best grades. Perhaps all 4 coins deserve a 66 with the first two deserving 66+. I didn’t think any were at the 67 level.
