They tried to change the direction the country was taking. The rebellion was smashed up by the imperial army (30000 soldiers vs 500 samurais... ). Saigo Takamori (seated wearing riding boots, white pants and military jacket ). Don't forget to mention the chrysanthemum and paulownia flowers! The chrysanthemum of course represents the emperor, and the paulownia flowers represent the Prime Minister.
