    Hi all,

I am new to the forum and would like to thank you all for having me.

I was roll hunting and I found this penny. I am also new to collecting. Is this penny worth anything? Should I get it graded?

    Thank you all,

    Joe

What you have is a perfect example of a worn Die Strike
It can cause DDD - Die Deterioration Doubling

Sorry but the value is just 1 CENT and not worth getting it graded.

Thank you for the reply, I knew this was common, but I didn't know just how common.

Even though it doesn't have any additional value, yours is a pretty good (bad?) example of DDD. If you're becoming interested in saving errors, it would make a nice addition to your collection. But no harm if it gets tossed back into circulation

You've been at this a lot longer than I, but I either don't see (or I'm not looking at) anything doubled. What I'm seeing is what looks like a planchet with an extra partial rim (possibly something untoward happened in the upsetting process) which has then been struck as usual in the stamping press resulting in part of the motto overlaying the interior partial proto-rim. Any possibility???

If you want to have the coin protected by a $50 piece of plastic, yes.

But I can see no other reason for having it graded.

I have one as well just to give you an idea of how common they are.

    30 yrs old, 1-in-10 rolls...1-200 rolls?.., pretty, 'affordable', in-the-hand...
    ...key date for DDD?

The one I found was 1-in-30ish rolls. Give or take a roll. I'm not sure about the OP's.

One in fifteen hundred... thanks for the data-point!
...must go to the Univac to compare scarcity with non-error types... $$$!!!!
(I'd switch out of punch cards and vacuum tubes, but the data re-entry
    would be a major chore.)

Thank you very much for the replies and feedback all. I recently came across a 1943 P steel penny but it's not in great shape. Still cool to have.

I was looking at this coin again. One side of the planchet is thicker than the other. I will post photos later .

If the dies are set up out of parallel one side will be thicker. I don't believe they carry any premium over face value.

Can you get a clear picture of the "FG" on the reverse?
