Presidential Dollar Coins, are they all dogs?

So I really don't collect these modern dollar coins (Sacagawea, Native American, Presidential) but I got a deal for 7 Presidential dollar coins uncirculated at face value so I thought, what the heck. I just put them all in mylar flips yesterday after TRYING to photograph them for my inventory spreadsheet.

So I sort of have 2 questions, first, are these things all ugly? I mean I understand bag marks but holy cow, Eisenhower really took a beating. Maybe the other presidents don't like him. All 7 are marked up pretty bad, no way any of them are better than MS60. I didn't know if these coins were prone to excessive bag marks or if it's just because of the deal I got, the company culls out the worst to sell cheap. I don't really care that much cause I got them at face, but was curious.

Next question, these are the first "gold" colored coins I've tried to photograph. I can't get the color to show. They all look silver in the pictures, no matter how much I change my white balance or try adjusting the color. Is there a trick for these? Underexposing and then adjusting in post? I didn't play around too much cause the pics were clear enough for my inventory purposes.

My bank used to ask me if I wanted uncirculated Presidential dollar rolls ... I keep saying no and they've stopped asking. I don't think I'm the only one.

HAHA, ya I'm not surprised. The funny thing about this deal was if I ordered these 7 coins for $7 I got a free uncirculated quarter. I MADE money on the deal. But boy are they ugly, figure I'll hang on to them for now.

No, but the majority of the First Spouses are.

I bought about $140 worth of these in uncirculated rolls on an ebay auction for like $130 shipped. Huh?? hahaha

A bigger and heavier coin (Ike dollars) means the rate it falls into the bins is at a greater force than smaller denominations. Thus, when it falls the impact is greater, causing more damage than lighter coins. The same is true for Morgan and Peace Dollars. Even 66 and 67 specimens are marked up. Not so much on dimes.

I have a solid BU roll of each Prezzy that was distributed through the banking system (Washington thru Lincoln, I think) and a smattering of others picked up cheap at auctions. I've also run into recently opened rolls and the coins look okay to me. Lots of 63's or so, and the occasional MS66 or higher.

What the OP wrote about sounds like a Littleton promo. Not my bag o' tricks.

I took it to mean they were all the modern "gold" dollars... not a silver looking one

Funny you say this. I went on a mission to put together presidential sets for my grandkids. Figure it would be educational and such. Every gold dollar I got my hands on looked abused like you described. I finally resorted to cutting open mint sets to assemble the quality books that I wanted. Hate to think how much I invested in that project knowing full well that when I leave this party the kids will take the books apart and spend the bucks!

Ya I meant Ike on the Presidential Dollar. Like this, remember I couldn't get the gold coloring to show right.

Yup, it sure was. Couldn't pass it up when I made money on the deal. Plus they're only 4 miles from my house so I have to throw them a bone once in a while. :woot:

Yea it was 7 coins for 7 dollars. I'm not an expert in risk analysis when it comes to investments, but I'm pretty sure I could unwind that one if I had to and not lose much.

I get mine from mint sets, but I think they look pretty good as a set.

Well it’s obvious what went on here. Littleton took all the crummiest ones and pitched em in buckets for this promo. I have the entire set, with all three normal mints, in a Dansco, all from mint sets and proof sets, and all the reverse proofs, ugly as they are, in the C&C OGP. Just for grins, I have the Franklin Roosevelt C&C too, just because it looks nice next to the others on the shelf. I bought the very last one the Philly mint had in the gift shop. Does PCGS do “last release”?

Are that a picture/pictures you took? Yours show the gold color better than any of the ones I took, just curious if there's a trick to it.

I suspected that's what they did, and that's ok. Again, I made money. Also from a business standpoint I would have done the exact same thing. I just wondered where some look like they took quite a beating if that was a regular occurrence on these particular coins. I don't think I have any interest in a set of these, at least not at this point but maybe 1 of my kids will take an interest in them at some point.

If I were interested in breaking open my rolls, I'd tell you what they look like. The original rolls were 25 per. But I've seen some vendors sell "rolls" of 20, 12, and even 16 Prezzy dollars in a subscription. I hope they segregated the nice ones and wholesaled the lesser to Littleton.

    By the way, regarding this:

"Yours show the gold color better than any of the ones I took, just curious if there's a trick to it."

The answer is NOT using automatic white balance on your camera, which forces all color to a neutral grey. Set your white balance manually to match your light source and don't let "auto" do it.

Interesting, I've been taking the lazy way out and using auto figuring the camera has always done a decent job for me. I'll give that a try. Thanks for the tip!

Youre one helluva shrewd collector Kurt.
You will retire from the proceeds of your collection, much wealthier than these Morgan Dollar wjack jobs.o_O

It looks like you're trying to set the white balance on the coin rather than a white piece of paper or gray card.
