I've recently found out the Royal Canadian Mint makes glow in the dark coins and I'm tempted to buy one because I have always liked unusual things. I'm not concerned on possible future value but wondering more what others think about them such as if you own one does it look as pretty in hand as the pics make it look. Thoughts and opinions appreciated. Eric.
is this the coin you are talking about ? link: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/20...in-the-dark-2-double-die.300417/#post-2808147
yeah thats the coin I was referring to. I was hoping maybe someone has seen them in hand and see if it had good eye appeal like some of the photo's ive seen make it look.
$6 would be acceptable if you like this kind of coin. as mentioned before these are novelty coins. buy what you like.
They're a pretty coin. The glow is better on some than others and also depends how dark you can get it, but they're a cool coin and the design is pretty in normal light No they're not, they're circulation coinage.
Other novelty coins circulate as well. These are just from the RCM. Like the US Mint, they will do anything to make you want one. It may be intended for circulation but it's just a novelty coin in my book.
I saw these not to long ago, I think it was on a metal detecting post. Kinda neat just for something different. I would probably grab one if it was good price.
hmm I didn't read they were circulation coins. I probably better buy uncirculated if I want one to have all of the glow in the dark features I would assume circulated ones wouldn't glow as much.
Are you sure those of the glow-in-the-dark version? The Canadian mint made two different variations on this coin, a glow-in-the-dark version that was sold for collectors only, and a non-glow-in-the-dark version that was made for general circulation. Six dollars sounds like a non-glow-in-the-dark version.
You’re mostly right. There were two versions of the coin, but the glow in the dark was released for circulation as well. It was the first glow in the dark circulation coin. That said if you want a higher grade one a lot of the circulatated ones weren’t and 6 bucks will generally be a lower grade one
The glow in the dark is just the tip of the iceberg in unique "coinage." Research foreign mints and you'll find many offbeat coins, and composition/shape of coins from foreign countries. The latest one is a solid silver coin, that is the world's first emerald shaped coin, with an emerald in it. And it does have a legal denomination from a small country. Mintage of about 300.
Well I bought the toonie and paid around 8 bucks, it was a little higher than I wanted to pay but I really do like it so it was worth it to me. I will post pics when I can.
