@jtlee321 was closest... So there's a story here. A local dealer in the Texas circuit is one of those dealers who buys collections. He's a nice guy and looks for odd ball holders which he likes to sell on at fair prices to people he knows appreciate them. I've bought some cool pieces over the years from him, such as a gold $1 in an Accugrade photoslab for $50 over melt. This is not one of those. This is the other end of his business. When you buy a collection, you appraise what you know you can sell on and he offers a fair price with a few bucks thrown in the for the "rest of the stuff". This usually ends up in his bargain boxes - $3, $5, $10. Flag label clad 50SQ kind of stuff. Pres and Sac dollars kind of stuff. One show a few years ago, when I asked if he had anything new, he offered the box of stuff. Sorting through, this was the only piece I was interested in, because I thought it was a cool label, and knowing NOTHING about what it really was, asked what he wanted for it. He looked at the greysheet for an 67 Sac and quoted a number, which I thought was fair for cheap coin with an oddball label and it came home with me. When I got home and did the research, I about dropped my jaw. A couple weeks later I sold it on to a dealer I know in the PNW who sold it on fleaBay two weeks later for $465. My profit contributed to the purchase of an 1870 XF40 3CS at the PNA show a couple weeks after that. But, you are asking what did I pay? Why $10 of course. I said it was in the stuff box.
Wow!! That really threw me through a loop. I knew nothing about these and I might have passed on it in the $10.00 box. But now I know and I'll keep my eye out.
Ok, here's a twofer. I picked these up over the weekend from a dealer at a local show. I posted them in the "Let's see your newest acquisitions" thread. Since the are consecutive serial numbers and both the same date and MM I thought I would see if you could guess what I paid for both of them. PCGS guide for 1880-S Morgans in MS-64 is $82.00 each.
#2 is my favorite as well... The reverse is nearly DMPL. The color on the obverse is out of this world.
