No, I didn't buy it from a coin club and its not a coin about a coin club, I bought it because of my coin club. Our old website had a coin of Akragas Sicily with a really cute caption. I have been looking for an example for years, (scarce coin), and Frank Robinson finally had one. Here is a pic courtesy of Frank: AKRAGAS, Æ28 (Hemilitron), 338-287 BC, River God head l./Eagle stg on capital, crab left, S1027 (£65); F+, centered, smooth dark greenish patina, eagle's head weak but present. Quite decent for this scarce issue. Ex Jack Capello. (A VF brought $1550, Kunker 9/11.) In hand its very much better, (like most of Franks' coins). All of the detail is there. On our old website there was a caption, ( I found out last week it was written by Bill Daehn's wife), that read: "The proud collector (eagle) sitting on a pedestal, turns back surveying his/her six new purchases. The spouse (crab) walks away in disgust." The coin in hand like I said is dark, but the eagle's head and the six dots behind are all present. Another proof to trust Frank's descriptions more than his pictures.
Neat coin! I always thought the other one from Akragas with two eagles and the hare was more apt. The numismatist is looking at his coin, while the wife loses it.
I love those coins (even more with the hilarious caption from you coin club)! Haven't managed to get one yet. Given the horrible quality of FSRs scans and the generally much nicer look when CT members do their own photographs, I bet it's a great coin! (that was a roundabout way of asking you for better pictures )
Yes, but you simply know I don't "do" pictures really. Don't know why I am so horrible at it. This one, in hand with a strong light, is every bit a full VF coin, its just dark and concave, so very hard to photograph. I am so far behind even putting new purchases in flips, labelling, etc I haven't a hope to learn to photograph. I filled up 4.5 red boxes the last couple of days, and barely put a dent in "the pile". Oh well, I guess I know what I will be doing in retirement, (or after the PhD and kids get a little older).
Sorry to revive an old thread, but when I found another one of these of course I had to buy it. I bought this today:
