I was roll searching and found this dime that is brown, almost black. It is evenly browned on both sides and it doesn't feel dirty or grimey or anything like that. I could clean it and see if it comes clean but before I do that, I decided to post the question to the brilliant coin collectors on this forum. Any ideas on how or why this dime is perfectly and very evenly dark brown? This new scanner I have really stinks so hopefully you can see this discoloration clearly. It is not rust although the scan almost makes it look like rust. It is a smooth dark brown dime.

    TIA,

I'm a retired gunsmith, from my past experience it almost appears blued... A caustic process to help prevent rust. If something like that happened it is just considered post mint damage.

What does it weigh in grams? Do you have a small jewely scale? That could eliminate/prove a wrong planchet error. .. But it just appears to have had a reaction with something chemical related...

likely to be a metal detector find. I have one that is very similar that I am sure was found on a beach at some point. I also have a quarter that is one I found in this manner.

    Best Regards

Before spending it, tkae it to a jeweler or something and get it weighed. That would help to determine it completely, but chances are it is post mint. But get it weighed first. Good luck.

Leave a clad coin outside and it will turn brown like that in no time.

I find coins on the ground all the time like that. The coins in gutters or near water turn that brown color very easily.

Your dime has environmental damage. Copper nickel coins exposed to the elements or buried will turn color like this.

All U.S. dimes (10-cent pieces) minted since 1965 weigh 2.268 grams (0.080 ounces)
The color change does not affect the weight.

About the weight?.. That all coins can have a plus or minus varience in weight. They are not all perfect. Yours is just a little bit heavier. Not enough to be considered a Mint Error.
