Thoughts on this 1880-CC Morgan?

I originally shot it under a close daylight lamp; this is corrected to an explicit daylight setting. It should be pretty accurate, with the usual caveats about monitor calibration, browser cluelessness, etc, etc. Not too different from the previous shots.

I'm going to try to get a closer shot of the date tonight if I get a chance. I'm still not seeing the overdate tells.

I'll concur this Morgan has very likely seen some degree of cleaning, "harsh" seems a bit, well, harsh to me. Maybe I'm missing something.

 

C'mon, Dude...it's a VF35! If you really think about it, that's exactly half of perfect. You can't expect it to have the details and sharpness anymore. But for me the denticles look good enough to say it is an authentic coin...Spark

 

And since you put it that way, I'd take this coin over either piece of a top-pop example that's been cut in half!

 

Cleaned possibly. It’s a hard call from pics. But not an abrasive one I can see. The green cast makes me wonder if there’s some pvc on it. Acetone wouldn’t hurt it

 

Hmm. I don't see any evidence whatsoever of green on the coin.

 

@-jeffB , after posting your updated photo, I don't see the over date that I thought I saw on the previous picture. It does have the reverse of a '78 though.

 

It will straight grade unless you remove the dirt and toning from the last 80 years. Acetone would make it look cleaned. Don't touch it.

 

Yeah, I had that experience with another dollar coin, although it was worth it to get the last of the goo off that one.

It appears that this coin is now mine, in exchange for a VG-F-ish 1883-CC and "other consideration". Still trying to figure out what I should throw into the deal to make it fair.

I might consider sending this in under the ANACS promotion and letting them attribute it. We'll see. I've got a few odds and ends that could benefit from authentication at this point.

 

Okay, I dusted off all the extension tubes, but I still can't find my remote shutter release, so I couldn't get quite as sharp as I wanted. Still, I'm thinking this is looking like a match.

It's not obvious under the schmutz, and I don't have a great eye for variety details, but that diagonal inside the second 8 and the swoop inside the 0 seem pretty unmistakable...?

Hmm. You mean the one with the red arrows, right? Not sure why that one would behave differently -- I uploaded it just like the others. I didn't generate it, though; I did export the others from Mac OS Preview.

I just tried hitting this thread from Firefox on my work PC (Windows 10, not previously used to log into CoinTalk), and I see the images just fine. Could you try again? Maybe try right-click "load image" or "show image in a new window/tab"?

You might have just been having a bad network day.

 

maybe it's because my ipad is an older one, not sure. It seems like most pics now show this small question mark, and i cant even click it. No worries though! Thanks for trying

 

@-jeffB, Now I sound like a politician. My first post said yes, then after new photos, I said no. Now with your latest photos, I think it has a chance. The second eight, lower loop potentially shows the diagnostics. There still is too much circulation debris to say for sure.

 

Man, what I wouldn't give for a politician who changes his position based on new information.

I'm reluctant to start digging at the schmutz, even with a rose thorn or the like -- but if experts think it's a good idea, I'm willing to give it a try. I may also try some different lighting to see if I can make things clearer.

 

Can you soak the area in olive oil and use a toothpick? Only problem is that if it is indeed what you are looking for, then the coin will look odd. You'd have to get it conserved before grading.
