Thought I'd resurrect this discussion, since I revisited the OP to get pix of that ring.

Who else has some more interesting "non-coin" ancient stuff for us to ogle?

Ancient Chinese knife. Huge and silver-plated, meaning it probably belonged to someone of some wealth.

Airport security is gonna be fun........

You can also put it into your checked bag. That's a risk of course, but anything is these days. Years ago I used to deal in a lot of antiquities, many of which I carried in a backpack onto the plane. The last time I did so with a large group of spears, maces, knives, etc, they were taken from me and locked up in the cockpit as they were determined to be weapons that could be used. In this day and age it would be easier to mail them.

Yeah, 'twasn't a random purchase. Little expensive, but what a COOL TOUCH with the Halstatt Civilization. This is such a common HUMAN need tool, that I had to have it.

The knife is going into the checked bag. No problem there. I will also have a 4-character Qi knife, which I don’t want to put into the checked bag nor do I want to mail it. It looks dangerous on x-ray, but it should be obvious it is not sharp in hand.

I’ve gotten Ming knives past security before, so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This was leaving London. I'm pretty sure it was pre-9/11, so things were not to tense. I remember them just inspecting the bag, the security officer shaking his head that I was a 'dumb tourist' who got scammed buying 'replicas'. They boxed them up and I got them back in San Francisco.

A little info. on your knife. Its Eastern Zhou, 6th - 5th Century BC. These types originated during the late Shang around 13th - 11th Century BC (but this form well known and documented to the period mentioned above). The form is thought to have a northern origin. A couple of references:

Back in 1999, I was living in the UK. We manufactured cutting implements for various industries. My VP Sales and I were flying from London to Brussels to accept an award as well as giving a gift to a major customer. We did NOT want to have this gift in our luggage under the plane. We carried it on-board with us, after casually showing the Customs people. It was a rare time when I was in a suit and tie. :D No problems! Times have CERTAINLY changed.

Great thread, Lord Marc! I wanted to participate but other than ancient coins, I really am not aware of any of my souvenirs and memorabilia being of great antiquity. I am however the trusted curator of some of my families old curiosities that have been handed down from generations past. I have some old silver serving spoons which date back to the 1720's according to one of our local antique specialists. I also have some haunting old tintype photos in folding cases complete with with locks of hair belonging to great-great grandparents and their children who lived in Canada and New England back in the 1800's. The item below is one of the most interesting so I thought that I would share it even though it is not particularly old by ancient coin standards. I can remember this item sitting on my grandfathers roll-top desk since I was a child. He told me that his grandfather (Robert McFarland) who was a teen at the time pulled it from a pile of ash and rubble left by the devastating Boston fire of 1872. Naturally, I felt the necessity to create the poster below.

@TypeCoin971793 's post above jogged a memory. I still have a simple Chinese knife (found it scattered amongst a bunch of Luristan, Marlik spears & stuff on a shelf...). Mine is about 6th Century BC, I think (from memory):

An Islamic spindle weight for making thread. Height is 14mm, diameter 21mm. The decoration is common but the item was highly prized as a tool. I love utilitarian objects but try to stay away from collecting them as I'm still dealing with the fact that I can't collect everything, which doesn't mean I can't have one.

Really enjoyable story regarding the ring received as a gift. I had something similar happen to me. Started a friendship.
