Whatever they’re using now is ridiculously clear.

When was this? They never flaunted it on their slabs. I imagine that the war over Official ANA Grading Service status isn't very high on PCGS's list of priorities. Do you know off hand the length of the Official TPG term? I can't imagine that ANA wants it to change very often.

Sad if this is the case. Pretty horrible if a non-profit established as a congregating point for hobby enthusiasts couldn't hold itself to a principle standard, as opposed to literally selling out to the highest bidder. Would have said a lot about how much they really cared if "Joe Bob's Basement Grading Service" had made the best offer.

Early 2000s was PCGS for the PNG one but I can’t find when they had the ANA one. It seems they used to value it and the longer they’ve gone without it the less they seem to care about it.

This is about all I can find on their previous deal before this one

The board would have probably elected to suspend the idea of having an official grading service in some sort of face-saving maneuver.

can someone post a pic of the ngc fatties that everyone mentions. Are these all the older ngc slabs that dont show the edges? If not, how can u tell you're looking at one if you cant judge width from a pic?

The fatty's don't have the line in the plastic under the label.
I believe the change was made to help shield the coin from the paper label, at any rate, fatty's tend to tone the encased coins. (often attractively, especially Morgan's).

I prefer the newest PCGS slabs, it's slim and compact.

The lastest PCGS slabs are the thickest they've produced to date.

When I started collecting coins in slabs I didn't have a preference. But then I zeroed in on PCGS for two reasons. First, I saw a few NGC slabs in which the coins were toning right at the prong points (not very attractive from my point of view). PCGS holders don't hold the coin by prongs, thus if any toning occurs is should be uniform around the edge. Second, I was putting together a collection of slabbed American the Beautiful 5oz quarters, and the PCGS holder is smaller than the ATB holders that NCG uses (they take up more space in the safe.) So I settled on PCGS. I do have a few ANACS slabbed coins. I don't like the odd curved tops. I do like the customer service that ANACS offers and the price is better as well.

Of course today PCGS does hold the coins and using prongs.

Yes - lately I have seen a few. But most don't. Especially the large 5oz quarters. I won't buy anything in a holder where the coin is being held with prongs.

5oz quarters...? This must be an exception, all regular size coins are in holders with prongs.
