Just made my very first eBay purchase for a coin, or in this case a medal. I got it because it depicts a Jeep and so wanted to have it for my collection. I suspect it's not really worth anything, but I only paid $12 which includes shipping from france. First, here's the seller's picture I'm having a heck of a time finding much info on it though. I tried to research before I purchased but just said, eh what the heck, I like it and it's not going to put me in the poor house. Any ideas on where I might be able to find better info on this? I wondered if any had ever been submitted for grading but I can't seem to navigate PCGS very well. I did find the Museum's website that shows that you can purchase this and other medallions. It's called De Lattre's Jeep and is #6 at this link - http://www.musee-armee.fr/en/coming-to-the-museum/museum-souvenirs.html Any thoughts on this one? The listing says it's gold plated, which again wasn't a deciding factor but I'd be curious to know how much plating and what purity. Update - I just noticed these can be purchased for 2 Euros at the Musuem which is about $2.50 US. I'm thinking these are not gold plated after all, which again, is fine. Still would like more info though.
It could still be goldplated, the plating wouldn't add more than a few cents to the cost of materials.
I have one similar to this (It's Sainte-chapelle), and it is not gold-plated. It's just brass. They are found in machines which dispense one for 2 euros. It's a souvenir medal for when you visit there.
I looked on the Museum's website and saw there were a number of different ones. Interesting that they come from a machine. Kind of a neat souvenir. I don't mind that I paid $9, it much cheaper than a plane ticket and I'll likely never go there anyway.
