NGC or PCGS

I like the look of the NGC slab better. If this was about taste, a slab of bacon wins over both.

PCGS for me.

 

Optically yes, but in terms of being safe they’re both perfectly safe

 

NGC. If all else was equal and only the appearance of the holder mattered, I wouldn't have a preference. But PCGS holders seem to be prone to cracks, even straight from them to you. They don't show to the naked eye but they appear in photos where the light is at just the right angle. I've found four slabs like that out of 25 coins I had graded by PCGS. Then on top of that they are arrogant and snooty and in their holier-than-thou manner, they deny culpability. 'Could not possibly have happened at their end and they can see no cracks except in my photo. Perhaps I have a cracked lens on my camera.' Really? How come it only shows up on PCGS slabs?

 

Interesting. Never seen that before Guess you had a defective batch, but I would expect real cracks to show from multiple angles so

 

I prefer the older NGC and the Gen.2.2 PCGS and NOTHING compares to the old small white ANACS holder.
No matter which one the coin is the most important part....buy the coin not the holder.

 

I eventually want my entire collection in the same type of slab. My slab of choice is the NGC prong type. I either seek out coins in these slabs, purchase raw coins for submission, or purchase coins in other slabs with the intention of having them re-slabbed eventually.

I like the white prong material (as opposed to the clear PCGS type) because it provides some contrast with the coin, which gives the coins some extra eye appeal in my opinion. I prefer prongs as opposed to coin sized circles because you do not lose the 3rd dimension, and I don't really mind having a little bit of the rims obscured.

 

I dont know why people like the small anacs slabs, the soap bars. Theyre so small compared to the top two companies. I like that NGC slabs say official grader of the ana. Gives it a tad more credibility to those not so familiar with the history of slabs. I emailed pcgs two weeks ago, twice, but they still havent replied. Is that normal?

 

So Budweiser is a more official beer to you because they paid the NFL to be that? That’s the same thing with the official ANA graders, it’s a purchased advertisement

 

This. Not only does NGC pay for the title, but part of the Official Grading Service deal is that ANA gets to send a certain number of coins to NGC each year for grading at no charge. It shouldn't be perceived as a quality score, measure of credibility, or ranking given by the ANA.

 

false analogy though. The ANA is the foremost coin organization in US, so serious numismatists are involved there. The org's backing of ngc says something about a related grading company, again to people who dont know history of slabs. In other words, it helps ngc credibility wise to some extent.

 

I don't buy into your logic here. The ANA could have just as easily aligned with PCGS. Both companies have probably the same credibility with serious collectors. I'm not sure what the history is with the arrangement between but I do know as an ANA member I can submit coins to NGC without being an NGC member. Maybe that's something PCGS wouldn't agree to.

 

Or they didn't feel it necessary or desirable bid on the "Official Grading Service" status.

 

And to those who don't know how NGC became the official ANA grading service. There was no great judging of grading or standards, it was just a matter of who paid them the most and gave them the best package deal.

The ANA solicited bids from all the grading services, and who would ever would pay them the most got to be the official service. The payment was not necessarily all upfront in cash, there was also deals for the officials to get free grading, and I would assume NGC sweetened of their bid by allowing ANA members submit without having to join the NGC membership. The ANA didn't care who became the official service, they even solicited bids from Accugrade and several of the other fourth tier grading services. But those lesser services couldn't match the financial bids of the top two.

Actually I would imagine PCGS submitted a very generous bid. Until NGC took it away from them, PCGS had been the official ANA grading service.

 

Maybe PCGS did not grade the officials high enough.

 

A complicated question. It depends on what gen slab for each TPG you're talking about and also what denomination coin.

 

Didn't give them a "straight" grade.

 

I really like the PCGS rattlers, but other than that I prefer everything from NGC over all pcgs holders.
NGC no line fatties are by far my favorite holder out there. Less is more. They are just so damn simple and clean.
I used to absolutely hate pcgs holders, but their newest generation is actually growing on me.
