What could cause this damage ?

    Looks like it was something very hot... maybe a house fire, or someone poured molten metal on it?

    Wouldnt it be discolored if it was heated? Seems like the reverse would be distorted somewhat if tools were used on the obverse with enough pressure to do that damage. Almost looks like delamination the way you can still read the date. Interesting.
