I am not a coin collector, but I am liquidating my brother's estate and found all of his old coins in his basement. Unforfunately, a good number of the boxes were ruined in a flood. Is it worth it to try to sell the coins without the boxes? They are still in the plastic protective casing, but the certifs of authenticity were ruined along with the boxes.

Most of the coins are from the US Mint and are still in the original boxes. Some are United Kingdom uncirculated coins from the 80's.

There are many coins still in good condition.

EDITED--Not a good idea to post ones email address

    Welcome, and in order:
    1) Ask people to PM you, it is not a good idea to post your e-mail address on a forum.
    2) The boxes were worth something, but the coins still have value, it just depends upon what you have.

I agree with Frank, the boxes add a little value to the coins as well as the COA does but the coins will still be sellable. Can you post some pics of what you have? We can help you place a value on them if you're interested.

i dont want to seem hatefull, but i disagree. when i buy certain coins or sets, i do lookm for the original packing and COA's. they might not add anything to the value, but i would bid higher myself just to have the original box and coa. as for why i make that choice, its only because of the eye appeal.

however, i do hope you are able to salvage the coins! i hope they are not ruined due to the food!

and lastly.. .welcome to the forum!! :D

thanks to all who answered (and so quickly!)

I will be posting pictures of some of the coins in the next few days. I was told by a coin dealer in NC that it reduces the value of the coin if not in the original box with the COA, but most of the coins are still in pristine condition.

Thank you all again...I'll post pics in a couple of days!

I'm also quicker to purchase proof sets and such when they include the box and the COA and I would even pay a few bucks more.

The original boxes and COAs are imoortant to many collectors. However, there are many more collectors that collect the coins regardless of the containers they came in. I hope your coins aren't damaged by the water and environmental exposure. It's probably not too late to mitigate the extent of the damage by keeping the coins dry.
Good luck and Welcome to CT. You'll learn a lot here.

Welcome to the forum devran and I am sorry to hear of your loss :( I am one of those who has no interest in the box and the rest of the stuff, for me the coin is of prime importance, the box just ends up in the garage LOL

Wholesalers discount only about 20% for destroyed or damaged packaging. The problem is that local dealers have a very limited market for damaged sets so will discount much more heavily. Now the bad news; if any coins in the set are damaged then there will be extreme discounting.

Keep in mind that some sets are worth a little more without packaging and some are worth much less so it depends on what you have.
