What a thrill for the finders. It's great that they were allowed to be in on the dig.

 

I saw this image of the find this morning:

 

From what I can tell all the coins on the right are from his reign.

 

According to what I read about the find in German media, it includes about 600 coins, partly split, and more than 100 of them can be assigned to king Harald Bluetooth. There are also Anglo-Saxon, Ottoman and Byzantine coins; the oldest piece is a Damascus dirham from 714, the most recent coins are from the Otto/Adelheid period that started in 983.

Thrill is right, I suppose, especially for the 13 year old boy. The finder who was with him is a tile setter and hobby archeologist who cooperates with the Denkmalschutzamt (monument protection/preservation office) and even took classes about how to "dig". In the state of Mecklenburg Western Pomerania (where the island of Rügen is) there are about 150 of those active volunteers.

Now THAT is something I would shell out bigger bucks for, to heck with the Ship of Gold hoard.

Keep in mind that the two finders will not get anything apart from the publicity. In most German states, including this one where the Schaprode hoard was found, a find that cannot be assigned to anybody who lost it, is owned by "the public" - and that is not the finder(s) but the state. In some cases you are entitled to get a certain compensation, in others you are not.

The "Ostsee-Zeitung" news site has a nicely done presentation of some of this year's finds. In German; just keep scrolling down. After a couple of "slides" you get to the "Goldschatz von Hiddensee" - that was found on the neighboring island in 1872-1874 but also has a Bluetooth connection, hehe.
