Another - 1976 2 Dollar Bill Question / Maybe for a Stamp Collector?

Hello! New member here...I have 1976 2 Dollar Bill with a 13 cent Bicentennial stamp, postmarked on July 4th 1976 / Independence, WV (July 4th 1976 was a Sunday and Post Offices were closed, however the Postmaster at the time did this for just a few of his friends and close family.)
Curious to know if this is considered "collectible"? Thanks to anyone in advance.

Not worth much over face value, but I think it is kinda cool.

Literally thousands and thousands were stamped and postmarked.
Most are postmarked with the issue date, and some are not.

I agree with @Wheatmaster101....I have a couple of examples with my hometown (Tampa) postmark. Kinda cool. A member here, Clay Irving, has many of these and I would consider him the resident expert.

Unfortunately, a lot of stories get passed along that sound great but aren't really true.

Because in your title you didn't know.. then in your post you did know. It was a bit confusing. But I get it now. You are asking if it's a good item for a stamp collector

 

So sorry for the confusion...I should have worded my post better.

 

My wife has a couple of these, her Dad was a mailcarrier.
No stamp, just a cancellation mark dated April 15, 1976.
Consecutive star notes, he was a Numimatic too.

 

Another broken heart. Maybe her grandfather told her that. Ha ha. Read # 7

Actually, it's not funny. I know where Kathy is coming from because I've been there. What is so wrong with parents, grandparents, etc. wanting their children to think they were the best thing since peanut butter?

Welcome, @Kathy D, and thanks for the post. Personally I’ve never seen one like yours before. I wonder what rock I was hiding under in 1976!

If I saw that note at a flea market or a local coin shop I would pony up a few George Washingtons.

At my small-hometown, the same event took place with the 1776-1976 $2 dollar bills and I was told then, that those bills would be worth something as a coin and stamp collector. I appreciate their look and design along with the stamping and all, however, the bill is a collector for those who love collecting $2 dollar bills. As for their worth, depends on the audience and believe the audience is getting smaller each year 'cause the "young-Generation" are not being educated about paper money and coins and such. Wally

 

I think stamp collectors prefer their stuff not to be canceled or glued.

 

Please let me clarify, this is not a "story told"...as I lived it. In 1976 I was 20 years old... (those were the days..my friend...) My father was still the postmaster in Albright, WV. (However the town was all but destroyed in the flood of '85) Mr Engle was the postmaster for Independence, WV. He was a good friend of the family. I totally forgot I had this bill as Dad gave one of them, along with 2 postmarked envelopes (picture's attached) to me and my 3 sisters. Cleaning out some boxes last week...and discovered them almost as pristine as the day given. I was just curious as to the worth...found this site and gave it a go....

 

Kathy, I have collections of both philately and numismatics, so I also remember the excitement at the post office in my small town when this event occurred. I have some of those as just the postmark stamped directly on the bill for no charge and a couple of first day covers that celebrated it also someplace around here. You woul probably get a good group of opinions from our sister forum ( same owner)

There are fewer stamp collectors in US now days then at that time, so it may take a while for responses, but they are good references. Mention you are a member here.

I know nothing about these but the fact that it was from Independence, WV and stamped July 4th seems like it would have an attraction for someone. Just not sure how to find them. I would definitely not dismiss it as of little value.
