Could you make a little more effort to find one that is worse than mine? Can you identify how many dies were used?
Hah. I think there is at least one that is worse than yours, Doug. As for identifying dies, I'll need to have large images. I'll work on it. The difficulty will be compounded by lack of full legends on most specimens plus general deterioration. Hopefully some data can be gleaned though.
Don't forget about getting those outer rings to spin? Yesssss... let's keep her occupied with meaningless tasks so she won't buy up all our coins...
Fascinating thread and coins. Never seen that before Thanks TIF for that posting, worth a "featured" label IMHO Q
TIF, I vaguely recall you out-bidding me on that OP coin (at a CNG auction a couple of years ago, correct?) ... ummm, not that I'm bitter or anything Amazingly sweet write-up (thanks for the huge effort to amuse us on-lurkers) ... Man, obviously you have way too much time on your hands?! => go buy a coin, Princess!! (you deserve it!!)
Possibly... it was from Pecunem 5, July 2013. That was before we became coin-BFFs . Plus, Pecunem doesn't show bidder names. That always makes stealing from friends less unpleasant . As for "go buy a coin"... like I need any encouragement . I've failed in my last ~10 bids but there will always be more. There are a few upcoming coins that I may go nuclear on to ensure success. Fortunately they are not types which sell for megabucks.
Yah, you're correct, that may have been just before we became Greg and Marsha Brady (coin Bro & Sis) ... the 2nd OP-coin just looks very familiar, but I could be mistaken? (it has happened once before) apparently, you have learned a few new tricks from your mentor, Clio => I hope you're having a nice Sunday morning
I do not know Clio but yes, I have learned a few things. Knowing that a nuclear bid is sometimes required and having the bank account to execute it are two different things though . Have fun at the school dance tonight, Greg. And don't you ever throw a football at me again!
Should of replied to this thread last night... An excellent write up as usual (a little to long? ), and fantastic pics.
great write up TIF, i remember your original coin well....it's a beauty and so is your new one. i either didn't know (or remember..likely) that they were struck (overstruck) that way....what a weird and intriguing coin. but i was hoping to see a new diorama.
I am taking the liberty you extended, TIF, to talk about my speciality, coinage of the Bar Kokhba War in Judaea, 132-135 CE. These coins are all overstrikes. Some collectors value the coins in which the undertype is identifiable over the coins in which the undertypes are totally effaced. I have one of Vespasian and one of Trajan, both struck on denarii. Does this interest anyone else? The attachment shows the silver trumpets used in the Temple and as desribed in the Book of Numbers.
Of course we are interested! Bring forth the discussion And welcome to CoinTalk, Arturo. It's a fun and relaxed place. (Almost) anything goes .
Thanks, TIF. I love you profile photo. What a beautiful coin. And a triga. I have a pair of cuff links with two different Republic coins, one displaying Mars driving a quadriga and the other Victory, driving a biga. It's too bad I don't have three arms.
That's a beautiful zuz. I've taken the liberty of converting the image to jpg and attaching it so that it's easier to view. Perhaps you should post it in a new thread, although I don't believe anyone here has any Bar Kokhba coinage to share. Still, many of us collect some Judaean.
Thanks, John. I hope I will learn how to do that. I have three zuzim. The one shown above, a jug for the water libation (although some say the jug was partitioned with two spouts, one for water and one for wine) and a narrow harp. The inscriptions are in paleo-Hebrew in order to tecall the glorious days of yore. It is clear, however that Bar Kokhba wrote his letter in script format which is used to this day. We have letters from Bar Kokhba found in a cave in 1972 by Yael Yadin.
I thought I'd bring back this amazing thread because it's a great read and so @TIF could add my new rarity to her list. Thanks a bunch to @chrsmat71 and @dougsmit for helping me ID this beat up beauty!
Holy colossal coin!!! What a strange and wondrous thing I'm about to share. While doing some deep digging into this subject I have come across zero coins in worse condition then mine (Doug joked about being glad that his was now not the worst thanks to mine). Until this coin. "But Ryro", you may ask, "why would you use hyperbole like "colossal" and "wondrous" if it's in worse condition then your dinger?" Because my friend this coin was possibly minted under Tiberius. Overstruck under Caligula. And then counterstruck under Domitian!!! Look at this wild child with at least 3 fathers... I wonder if there are any others...
