I got the straight dope on the 2019 Commemerative coins tonight. You may know that it commemorates the 1969 moon landing and I believe the obverse image is common knowledge. Many of you may also know the coins are convex/ concave.

Here's what you may not know. The reverse image will be the helmet visor with a reflection of the first footprint on the moon. The curvature of the coin makes the footprint look like its splashing up from the surface of the moon. Additionally, the coins will have a reeded edge, which the previous curved coin issue (baseball glove) did not have. But wait, there's more! The will be a 5 ounce silver puck too!

There will be a set which includes $1, half dollar and Quarter Eagle in addition to the 5 ounce puck.

I got this info from a member of the CCAC committee that had the final say on the design on behalf of the CCAC. He asked us to keep it under our hats, so I won't mention his name.

I'm definitely planning to buy all these coins

And let's all hope that the price structure is somewhat affordable

I can't imagine that it will be any more or less affordable than any other commemorative issues.

Being a space program buff when I was a kid, I hope the designs are worth buying.

That description doesn't make any sense. It doesn't match any of the proposed designs. It also makes no sense to have a helmeted visor on both sides of the coin. One side of the coin is the reflection and Buzz Aldrin's helmet of the lander and the planting of the flag on the moon. That was the mandated inside.

There was one design which would be similar to what you're describing, but it just shows the footprint, no visor no reflection.

Hopefully, the Mint is not expecting us to pay good money for that.

It is possible that I misunderstood the description. I hope not. I don't want to be misleading.
I think that's exactly what they're expecting. They probably wouldn't make them otherwise. They probably understand that there are a certain number of modern haters who won't be interested. I suspect these coins will sell out quickly.

Wait, a quarter eagle, not a half eagle? That would be the first quarter eagle minted since 1929!

Now entering the Twilight Zone of Numismatics with cup-shaped coins commemorating humbugs:

The concave side for soup, the convex side for foot massages.

The baseball commemorative had a reeded edge as well. I don't know why you think it didn't.

You're right, of course. I should have said the 5 oz puck have a reeded edge unlike the previous pucks. Thanks for pointing that out. I enjoy your podcast.

I'm thinking ... If I solder some handles onto the coins, I can have a whole soup set. This is all starting to feel very Franklin Minty. (I, personally, liked the Baseball HOF coin btw.)
