Definitely looks cleaned to me, that color doesn't look right at all. I'm sure it's straight graded though and know they're lenient with light cleanings from that era. It's one I would pass on though no matter the grade. Original color is very important to collectors of early US gold. This one would be tough to ever sell later on.
VF details. Looks like graffiti or something removed from obverse fields. Also, damage to nose and many noticeable digs above date. Too much to overlook on obverse. Reverse is remarkably clean.
George Washington was the one that cleaned it. Does that make a difference? VF35 CLEANED (by George Washington)
I always think that to, I could have a Franklin that Lee Harvey Oswald had when he shot Kennedy. Heck, I have british silvers that couldve been carried by a soldier on to the beaches of Normandy.
Well, I think that's a healthy awareness for a young collector to have, Mike. I know it's imaginative. But it shows you conceive of coins as more than just a commodity, and I think that's a good start.
My guess is XF Details, Obverse Tooled. The fact that this thread was posted makes me wonder if it got the “rare coin pass” and is in a straight graded holder...
