I dont own this. It was posted elsewhere by a fellow dealer asking for input. From an Aeternitas reverse of Florian. Anyone ever see anything like it?
Whoa. Talk about a serious case of "horse face"! Or is it more of a goat? It sure looks intentional, doesn't it? [heading off to ACsearch now to see if other goaty Aeternitae can be found]
Four Florian Aeternitas hits in ACsearch: Full goat (same die as above): Halfway there: Sort of normal:
Here's an aeternitas from wildwinds. I would say the example above could be just an odd engraving on the reverse, though it would be interesting to see if there was an animal head option for the personification. Anubis' head might be a guess, or a goat - if so it could be Khnum, another Egyptian god My searches so far haven't revealed anything conclusive.
It reminds me of this festival of Isis coin with Anubis on the reverse. Not my coin; I can't remember the source from which I downloaded it, either. My apologies, therefore, for not being able to credit the coin's owner:
@zumbly is the lucky dog who owns that dog-headed coin. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/ancients-late-roman-pick-up-4-festival-of-isis.249276/ A very interesting question. If the resemblance to a goat or horse is intentional, what is the reason for it? Engraver whim or joke? A misunderstanding on the part of the engraver? A reflection of the engraver's personal religious background?
Here's another one coming up for auction. Hard to tell in this image but the face doesn't look goaty although it does look somewhat like a stereotypical alien
Several more Florian Aeternitas are currently on eBay and Vcoins. None of them have a goat face. Although I didn't looks through every Florian with female deity or personification reverse, none of the other types had a goat face.
I just googled "Aeternitas with goat head" and was directed to this post already and Ken's image. Google indexes are fast!
Interesting coin Ken! It looks more like a horse to me. Could it be a horse headress, similar to the goat ones from RR coins? Sometimes the person below the headress looks a bit like a goat. (The following is not mine. It is a Cornuficia 3 from NAC Auct 84.)
In my opinion not unusual, just bad art from long ago. Could be Anubis but I really doubt it. Gravers slip up. I'm just grateful it looks like a horse and not an alien. Please no more Tsoukalos. He's just a shill for that charlatan Daniken.
