I don’t know why I like this coin, but I do.

Today I picked up another Stone Mountain Commeorative Half Dollar.

    Grade opinions please. 948F32E2-D633-43F8-951B-0404374B9B6E.jpeg EB76AE55-52CD-4110-8E48-C75C1EA9EED5.jpeg

I also like the design (and can't quite say why I do...it's just cool!).
I would say it is a nice UNC piece; if guessing a grade, I'll go MS 63.

By the way, is it just me or are the pics a bit blurry?

The pictures would have been better, if you had placed the coin on a flat surface, instead of holding it. Pictures are not clear.

Looking at the original post, it appears that the second set of photos in the thumbnail are on a flat surface, but those don't show the luster too well.

Photos are not my strong suit. Let me wait until I can take pictures in daylight tomorrow.

I love the Stone Mountain commemorative. Possibly due to Borglum's name being attached to it. I also love a good depiction of the eagle on coins.

Having grown up in the North, I can't say I'm a fan of Lee or Jackson due to my birthplace, but each absolutely had characteristics that I deeply admire.

So after buying a nice Walking Liberty Half (possibly my favorite), this was my 2nd purchase and my first U.S. Classic Commemorative.

I agree. I’m a northerner as well and definitely not a fan of Lee or Jackson and particularly not what they fought for, but the coin is beautiful and I really like it.

I have had an opportunity to pick up two in the past 2 weeks and jumped at them both.

You know, I'm really starting to develop a taste for these classic commemoratives.. I like it, I'd say it's UNC, but will wait for some other pics.

Hey Mike, here's a really easy way to take some photo's for those that are photographically challenged. I know you have quite the numismatic book library, so grab a couple of your Mega Red's stack them up on your desk. I would assume you have a desk lamp for looking at coins? Set your lamp to one side of the books. Now lay your coin on the desk near the edge of the books. Place your camera phone flat down on the stack of books. Center the coin in the screen of your phones preview, zoom in a bit to fill the screen and take a picture.

I just did these in about 2 minutes on my desk using 2 Mega Reds, desk lamp and my iPhone 6s.

You can adjust exposure by touching different parts of the screen (this works on an iPhone, I assume it or something similar will work on an Android). This would help control hot spots.

I like that second one as well. There's a few marks on the reverse that would hold it back from Gem. I'd say MS-64 on it as well.

Edit, is that rub on Lee's knee? It could be AU.

I will stick with my original MS 63 opinion, but I could see it as an MS 64 as well.
The second is just as nice (maybe even a bit better).

Edit: looked at the reverse on the second one after @jtlee321 mentioned it and I agree that might hold it back (still a nice 63 or 64 in my opinion).

Not bad for a single light source and an iPhone

No, it’s not rub, and the knee belongs to Stonewall Jackson. Lee is the one in the background.

I'm glad to hear it's not rub. Then I stick by my original guess of MS-64.

Ahh... Thank you for teaching me something. For some reason I though Jackson had the long beard and Lee did not.

As a side note, I am related to Robert E. Lee. My family tree comes from his uncle, so that makes me a distant cousin. I just recently found out about this from an Aunt who had been doing a lot of genealogy research on our family.

It's kind of ironic as my nickname in the Air Force was "General Lee" even though I was enlisted. But I had no idea of the lineage at the time.
