    Hey there all,
I git a little ambitious yesterday with a trade dollat purchase and wanted to get the educated opinion of the forum. I have read that trade dollars are often counterfeited so that is a concern... However, I did check and the obverse/rev pairs are correct on this coin.
My main question is about the coin's status as a details coin. It looks to me to have been dipped... I'll await the forums input on that matter. As for other cleaning, it's tough to tell if the scratches on the fields are due polish marks or cleaning wipe marks.
The coin is offered with a guarantee for 30 days and I'll have not yet received it but I thought I'd get the conversation started and then will update the sellers photos with photos of my own when the coin arrives.
Finally, input on grade and whether or not to send it for grading would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Personally speaking.... I am one that is far more interested in the history of his coins than I am about the intricacies of grades. I own several cleaned coins. It doesn’t bother me as long as they have the proper eye appeal. And man, this one has eye appeal. I would be proud to have it.

Yeah, the haloes and highlights made me think "polished" even before I saw @C-B-D's post. I'll await in-hand photos -- and expert opinions, since I ain't one.

Sorry, but I’d return it and search for an example with original surfaces and w/o fingerprints. Trade dollars are coins which I personally would only buy certified, especially when buying online.

I could probably count the atoms left of the original surface.

    Genuine, but harshly polished

People buy coins for different reasons, and one of them is to hold onto and appreciate for many years. However, there always comes a time when you have to sell these coins and in this case you can never get back what you paid for it. This coin appears to be ruined.

I do not collect these, nor do I know the diagnostics for authenticating. I viewed this thread yesterday and didn't want to post my thoughts at the time. I wanted to see if my suspicions were correct. So far, I have not read any posts that question its authenticity.

My first thought after seeing the picture was to question whether it's genuine. I need to add one for my type set so I've been looking at Trade Dollars for over a year and I've not seen one that looks anything like the one you posted. There is something way off about it to me. There appears to be zero patina. Not even in the finer detail areas. If it was dipped to completely remove the patina, I would expect a very dull surface. If someone dipped it than polished it, I would still expect it to look differently. Again, I'm not a collector/expert of this series, but I thought it might be a modern reproduction.

Maybe some other members can chime in. @Mainebill

I had some of the same thoughts, but am not that familiar with trade dollars. I have been watching the thread to see what everyone else thought about it.

I'm very eager to receive the coin and see it in hand...there are so many photo tricks that can misrepresent a coin. I'll post photos once I receive it.

I highly doubt it’s authenticity i don’t like the weak denticles and don’t like the position of the arrows through the eagles claws among other things. My call a struck silver fake why the details seem weak in places yet the star centils are well developed. Probably a transfer die type struck Chinese counterfeit

If Wild Bill doesn't like it then ...
I'll say I don't like the lettering on IGWT and Liberty on the Observe.
    It's fat and inconsistent.
Also EPU banner on the Reverse looks off.
Hope it looks better in hand.

Send it back. Unless you handle these all the time such as @Mainebill does, you’re best off with a slab.

Your pics are nice, but I still see a polished coin. I still think it is genuine, but not worth grading. What do YOU think of it in-hand?

In hand, it looks more genuine than it did in the sellers photos, however, there are far more hits apparent than there were in the photos.
I agree that it appears to have been polished.

It looks genuine to me but dipped and polished so any original patina has been stripped away. It is a very common issue and I would return it and wait for one with more originality. This one is more the look that I like:
