At first i realized what's the point of getting Prez dollars and then i realized how cheap they are i bought a 2007 set for only 8.00 today at a coin show!
So Luc87 why do you think they are so cheap? Maybe because they will always be? Just stating an opinion here and I'm sure many will disagree with it but at least think about it. Food for thought.
They probably won't ever be worth much anytime in the near future, but it'll make for a nice looking set to have. Unlike all the other moderns where the only thing that changes for a hundred years is the datemark, the fact that there are varied designs that only debut once will increase demand someday, and those that get them now at face will be more appreciative that they did when others are paying a premium for coins made in the hundreds of millions. Sometimes a coin's worth is calculated in the collecting experience itself and not in the bloated realm of monetary gain. Guy~
I can agree with that reasoning Guy. There will be a lot of different designs. If that's what floats somebodys boat then go for it. I'm not out for sheer monetary gain but it doesn't bother me either. Although I am known for not liking any of the new U.S. Dollars I was making a point as you were. Seems we may have covered a lot of the points.
My smooth-edge Washington dollar (I found in a DENVER roll) isn't a cheap coin, if I had to buy one. I'm not saving any rolls, but am saving two of each circulated P & D dollars (lettered both ways), and the proofs.
I'll be honest, I don't particularly like them either, and think the Mint is in a state of insane denial that a dollar coin has a chance at circulating. But, I'm doing a set of them, just like I did the State Quarters, because I think it will be a neat gift for a grandchild in the distant future. If nothing else, it'll be about eighty dollars in face value, and what kid wouldn't like that? GUy~
CONGRESS is in denial. The Mint does what it is told to do. They know the fate these coins will suffer (sitting in vaults by the millions).
Im keepimg a roll of each just to do it.......Buy at the bank for a dollar each, and put the rolls away...The wrappers even say what coin it is.....my grandkids will like them someday...(If I ever have any)
The only reason they wont circulate is because they havent cancelled one dollar bills yet. It circulated in Canada after that, so all they have to do is try.
I like them...they are very nice once they have toned a bit...I know I am a minority in this opinion.
The success of the coins would be a slam dunk if the US eliminated the dollar bill as have Canada and most European countries. Having traveled to both Canada and the UK recently, the lack of the single (dollar, pound, etc) note is not really a big deal even without having had time to get used to it. If you like paper, you can carry 5's, 10's and 20's. I'm also building sets for my children (and I guess my eventual grandchildren). I kind of enjoy the process and I'm taking the time to learn about the presidents as I go along. I never really knew what most them looked like except for the ones on other money. The proof and satin mint set version of the dollars are much more attractive than the circulating versions, so that's what I'm focusing on for my albums.
I have a Washington Dollar that is so so copper (or gold?) in color! When you compare it to the other Washington Dollar coins, the color is so much deeper. Is this pretty common? Thanks! Nana
I don't mind the dollar coins, but which would you rather have in your pocket, four dollar coins, or four dollar bills? I'm collecting the proofs, because I prefer them a bit better. But just me. Phoenix
I agree with zabb. If they ever discontinue printing the dollar bill, it is only then the dollar coins will ever see any amount of circulation, but, as its been stated in previous threads, absolutely none of the dollar coins thats ever been minted in the U.S. saw much circulation outside of the casinos. Back during what everyone calls the "old west" dollar coins did circulate more than they did in the east because paper money was seldom seen. Also, as far as the burden of carrying around a pocket full of $1 dollar coins goes, there would still be $5s $10s $20s $50s and $100 dollar bills printed. So, there would never be a need to carry more than 4 $1 dollar coins at a time. Of course, this is only my observation.
i have nothing against the dollar coins, but just hope they do not push the bill out of circulation. those things get heavy fast! :rolling:
I think you guys are all forgetting the $2 bill. I think it's time they ramped up production of those babies and eliminated the $1 bill.
Now theres an idea that I really like. Can the $1 dollar bill and bump up production of the $2 dollar bill and the one dollar coin will see more circulation. I think that'll work.
