Hi, my name i Mikael and im from Sweden. I recently inherited 2 coin collections from my grandmother. Ive looked around on swedish webpages but the market in Sweden dosent seem to be Very big for these kind of coins. Set nr1: biafra gold coins from 1969 in the box with cerificate (1£, 2£, 5£, 10£, 25£) Set nr2: gold coins from Elisabeth II 1967 Bahamas (100, 50, 20, 10) I would really appreciate some advice how i should sell them and if any one could help with a value. Both coin set are in perfect condition and hasnt been touch for ages. Sorry for my poor english Kind regards Mikael
Those are some beautiful Gold coins. I really don't knw much about them, as far as purity and collectability. They are some nice sets. What do you plan on doing with them?
Thank you! I am planning on selling them. Theres is no future for coin collecting in sweden, all the collectors are getting older and older and almost no new collectors start collecting.
If I were selling them I would try and get the biggest audience possible, figure the gold content, and stick with that value at the least. Most will offer less than spot gold for them, they are the middle men. You want the final collector. And if you can't get the spot what is wrong with holding on to them for a while? They were a gift and something to remember. Others will soon chime in to help you out. Good luck!
Thanks for the advice, spot gold price should be possible to get in sweden as well, my real question is if the value of them reaches beyond the gold price?
If you find the right person, yes, they are worth more than spot. The problem is that the majority of potential buyers will be only interested in the gold spot price. You should be able to find and approximate retail value for the individual coins at this link: https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/ Bear in mind two things though: those prices are dealer prices and no one will give you that much for them online; sets often, but not always, demand higher prices than the individual coins.
Heritage Auction (heritage.com) does free appraisals if you sign up. You can send them photos of your sets and they'll do an assessment. At the least, you can probably get info on where to sell them (make sure to ask for their suggestion) Found this for the biafra coins, click on the prices tab for auction results. You can then research the auction company if they're legit : 25 Pound 10 Pound Found this for the Elizabeth/Bahamas set, same thing, research the auction company if they're legit : Set Maybe someone from CT have heard of them. Just thought I'd mention that my birthdayS are coming up (one for each set) GOOD LUCK !
that Biafra set is amazing. each coin gold purity is .917 gold. each coin has a mintage of 3,000. from what I am seeing my World Coin Catalog is your coins are proof coins. handle these coins very carefully... by the edge only if you have to pick them up...otherwise you will get finger prints on them. the 1 pound coin weighs 3.99 grams or 0.1178 oz.. 2 pound coin weighs 7.99 grams or 0.2355 oz. 5 pound coin weighs 15.98 grams or 0.471 oz. 10 pound coin weighs 39.94 grams or 1.1775 oz. 25 pound coin weighs 79.88 grams or 2.3551 oz.
my 2015 catalog has grades and values, but I am sure they are worth more now. 1 pound grade proof 63/$175.00 proof 65/$200.00 2 pounds coin grade proof 63/$350.00 proof 65/$400.00 5 pounds coin grade proof 63/$675.00 proof 65/$750.00 10 pounds coin grade proof 63/$1,650.00 proof 65/$1,750.00 25 pounds coin grade proof 63/$3.350 proof 65/$3,500.00 check with passed sold auction prices. I am sure the prices might be little more that this. I am impressed with how big the 25 pound coin is. geez 2.3551 ounces awesome.
Interesting history on Biafra too, just googled it. I've never heard of Biafra before. Thanks for sharing!
Welcome to CT. Looks like Grandma really hooked you up. A small set like that, I wonder if it can only get rarer. Being that only 3000 were made. I would have to hold on to it, and sell a coin only if I really needed to. That's just me, Do you collect?
WOW ! What a beautiful set of PROOF coins ! Right now Gold is down for investment... most people here in USA are unloading their gold coins for as must as they can get. Do you have an eBay account ? I've seen many Germans selling their coins on eBay and they're doing great with sales to potential customers worldwide ! If you're not desperate for the cash, one more year to see what happens with Gold prices will give you a definite higher price for when you sell them. Congratulations, those are awesome inheritance gift from GrandMa... she didn't realize buying PROOF coins are better than the unusual coins from the bank. Keep us informed what you plan on doing with them ! Tack för som visar oss vad ett underbart arv din farmor lämnade dig med!
Very cool coins. I would recommend not taking them out or touching them, which it looks like you may have done already with some. Do NOT clean them, wipe them, get fingerprints on them, etc.
Very cool, were you aware of Biafra before acquiring this note? From what I read, the republic only lasted 3 years.
I was aware of it the day it first existed. It was news at the time. But I did not realize it lasted that long. The news died fast.
2015 World Coin Catalog specs on the Bahamas proof coins. all .917 gold purity. mintage-850 , 100 dollars coin, weight- 39.94 grams or 1.1775 oz. proof 65-$2,000.00 50 dollars coin, weight- 19.97 grams or 0.5888 oz. proof 65-$1,150.00 20 dollars coin, weight- 7.99 grams or 0.2355 oz. proof 65-$465.00 10 dollars coin, weight- 3.99 grams or 0.1178 oz. proof 65- $240.00 con values could be higher now. check passed auction sales on Ebay.
Thanks for all your help guys. Yeah there is a few fingerprints, but it not from me. But no new ones will be placed. I see that a few of u have found my coins and know there purity and weight. For me this is a bit confusing, if someone could help me figure out the exakt amout of pure gold every coin has or better yet there exakt spot price of every coin at the moment i then can understand how much i at least have to get for them. I think a lot of you are right, the problem is that if the bullion value is say 10000 dollars for all of them and the numismatic value is 12000 dollars, if you then have to use a auction firm that takes 20% the effort isnt really rewarded, alltought some collector might be happy which isnt bad.
You have some beautiful and valuable pieces there. In honor of the love your grandmother showed leaving them to you, I hope you will consider holding at least one piece to pass on to future generations that may not have known your grandmothers love.
