Well, a song may be too far. I couldn't carry a tune in a hand basket. Be that as it may, I did pick this denarius up relatively cheap; under $20 shipped. When it did not sell at Roma E Sale 40, Lot 704, I was able to buy it from the owner who discovered it while metal detecting in Eastern Europe. ELAGABALUS AR Denarius OBVERSE: IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG - Laureate, draped bust right REVERSE: P M TR P III COS III P P - Sol standing left, raising hand and holding whip; star in either field Struck at Rome, 220 AD 2.9g, 18mm RIC 28, RSC 154, BMC 179 ex. Roma Feel free to add anything related.
What an fantastic deal! I'd pay a lot more than that just to say I had a coin that could be traced to the ground . Looks like a nice deep strike too.
WOW @Bing , Killer deal! Well done! I got this one from @Mat a few years ago... RI Elagabalus 218-222 CE AR Antoninianus Radiate Roma seated
Nice one Bing - and I like that price. Nice Elagabalus denarii are somewhat hard to find, in my limited experience and yours is a nice one. I have a very ugly version of yours (or similar) - it was the best price ever, however. An eBay seller shipped me this in lieu of what I'd bid on. He immediately made good on the mistake and sent me the correct coin. I offered several times to ship back the wrong one, but he insisted I keep it, since he'd made the mistake. Free. A pretty good eBay experience, but I need to upgrade, obviously.
@Bing That is a really great coin. For $20 shipped too is kind of ridiculous. I agree with @Marsyas Mike in that the vast majority of coins for Elagabalus tend to the garbage side of condition range. Yours is well struck on both sides with clear legends and strong central detail on both sides. Nice chase down of the coin after the sale ended! Did Roma have it in their unsold lots and you bought it from there?
No, I know the seller and we came to a deal. He even had the coin shipped from Roma directly to me. It actually came to about $18 shipped. I bought three of his other coins that failed to sell at Roma and one other he just discovered metal detecting "it did not surrender so easily under the root of tree..l dig under root about 15 cm".
@Bing That’s pretty neat. Good times too saving on auction house juice. I would have jumped on that coin too for $18.
I think I've got the same coin but with Alexander Severus instead of Elagabalus. I paid exactly the same amount. Condition of mine is not encouraging. What do you say, please?
