Here's one of my Frank Robinson auction wins that arrived in the mail today. A Sestertius of Severus Alexander, A.D. 222-235, an emperor who unfortunately was killed in the uprising of Maximinus Thrax. Type: AE Sestertius, 29mm, 17.6 grams Obverse: IMP SEV ALEXANDER AVG Laureate head of Alexander right Reverse: VICTORIA AVGVSTI Victory Standing left, holding wreath and palm Reference: RIC 618, Sear 8022, Cohen 569 The Victory may be celebrating the defeat of the Germans at the battle of Harzhorn, but historians are unsure about the exact date of the battle, which occurred either during the latter period of the reign of Alexander or the early part of the reign of Maximinus.
AAAAAAHHHHH ! Severus Alexander, Sestertius Rome mint AD 231 IMP SEV ALEXANDER AVG, Laureate bust of Severus Alexander righ, with light drapery on left shoulder IOVI CONSERVATORI, Jupiter standing left, holding thunderbolt and sceptre, with a small figure of the emperor at his feet, SC in field 14.75 gr Ref : RCV #7966, Cohen # 74 Q
Coins of Severus Alexander were found at the site of the battle, but so far none of Maximinus, thus the sequence dating.
Always love to see more SA! Here's my current avatar coin (a sest.), and also the AE as version of yours:
