Finally Finished My Registry Set!!! (Toned Proof Roosevelts)

After finally finding the perfect 1964, my set is complete! Check out my digital album here! https://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/album/141743. I will try to submit this to PCGS for consideration for best Digital Album of the year.

In putting together this set, I favored original examples that exhibit toning patterns characteristic of Capital Holders and Dansco albums. I also aimed for variation in color and toning pattern. This set took me four years and many PCGS submissions to complete, which speaks to the difficulty of locating premium toned examples of all dates despite the ready availability of high grade blast white examples. Some of the most common dates (e.g., 1960 and 1964) proved to be the most difficult for me. I could have completed this set many times over with sub-par examples, but I have been a perfectionist in looking for unique examples that fit the theme.

In the process of completing this set, I accumulated a number of duplicate toned proof Roosevelt Dimes. Many of my duplicates have wilder toning or are numerically finer than those in my registry, but did not fit as well with the overall theme of my set. You may view my complete collection at https://www.pcgs.com/SetRegistry/co...d-coins/rainbow-proof-dimes/imagegallery/3037.

If you think any of my duplicates would look better in my set than my choices, please let me know your thoughts!

Amazing, congrats! You've assembled a BEAUTIFUL set!! This was my first completed set, mine are raw in a Capitol holder. I know the 1950 and 51 set you back a few bucks!!

Beautiful. I like the '63 the best. It has nothing to do with that being my birth year either.

    Congrats on completing your set!

Thanks, that 1954 one used to be in an old NGC PF68 Holder. I think it’s kind of cool that Roosevelt looks like he’s wearing an earring!

Thanks! The 51 was embarrassingly expensive. I had previously purchased several real nice 51s, but then I came across that 51 in an old NGC holder and immediately knew it was “the one” for my set. I thought it might go cameo when it crossed, but it didn’t. I think it’s a 68 but I don’t feel like spending money to resubmit.

You really put a lot of time, energy, and money into this and it really shows.
And even that you say finished ...knowing you it will always be a work in motion.

Now that your circulation strike set is complete, you could start on the proofs! I’m debating what my next side project set should be (ie, in addition to my ongoing Mercury sets). I’m a bit intimidated by business strike Roosies as the set is so much bigger than the proofs and could potentially get too pricey for a side project.

Thanks Paddy. Yup, it will always be a work in progress. This set took so much energy and perseverance that I almost gave up several times! It was so frustrating finding multiple sweet 51s and not being able to find a single 60 or 64 I liked. Or taking endless gambles on fuzzy eBay pictures of raw coins that I thought might be monsters (and frequently losing those gambles and reselling at a loss). Or submitting a sweet toner that PCGS graded a 64 for reasons I still can’t figure out. But it made it all the more satisfying at the end.

how long did it take you to collect all these beauties ? I loved toned coins too. Mostly Canadian coins.

This is very nice. I just wish I could see these coins in hand. I've never really liked the PCGS photo service....they just make the coins look "unreal" or painted. These would look great just in hand or a less "professional" photo.

    Terrific set though...
