Mike at these levels I wouldn't buy and I am not trying to justify the price, only that there are reasons other than deception that people dont accept paypal, sell raw coins, use large font, and will not accept returns.

You know I like mercury dimes because they are inexpensive and one of my favorite designs. For a $30 common date mercury dime I cannot imagine why someone would sink $20 into having it graded and if paying a premium just because its in a holder is absurd. At the same time buying a raw $30 Mercury dime is a red flag to many.

I was following one of the auctions, for a 1795 dollar in VF-EF condition.

It looked good and the bids were way under the "book value" for the coin. This morning, the listing had been removed. Does anyone know anything about this? I have the item number, but it isn't helpful because you'll just get a message saying the auction is no longer available.

Perhaps the coin was counterfeit and pulled by eBay? I know some of this seller's earlier sales included questionable coins, but I didn't recall the coin you mention.

Another explanation is he might have sold the coin outside of eBay...Mike

Another of this seller's recolored/doctored coins:

For those not familiar with these coins, this coin is almost certainly a member of the Randall Hoard. Virtually always found with spots and never in a color like this due to the storage condition of the hoard (underground in a barrel/keg), I've never seen an original example of this hoard that look like this -- and that, along with the unnatural color, means that this coin has in all likelihood been recolored.

For those who would rather not take my word for it, take a look here for examples of the same date/variety and report back what you find:

    http://coins.ha.com/common/auction/...ion+Archives&hdnSearch=True&txtLotNo=&stage=1

Here's another date/variety (1820 n-13) that is also from the hoard. Take a look at these coins and compare them to this seller's example:

    http://coins.ha.com/common/auction/...ion+Archives&hdnSearch=True&txtLotNo=&stage=1

As virtually all of this seller's silver has been dipped, the recoloring shouldn't come as much of a surprise, but it does speak to the credibility of the seller.

    But draw your own conclusions...Mike

p.s. I also find it interesting that this person, who supposedly knows nothing of coins, not only identified the coin as a Randall Hoard coin, but also knows what other Randall Hoard large cents look like, as well as knows enough to judge this coin as "original mint red" (which it is almost certainly not). Coincidence?

Well, I am breaking my promise and am posting one more time to call for a stop to the posts and to call for a Truce!

Please, enough already! I am sure that everyone knows that Leadfoot would not buy coins from this Seller and that he thinks that he or she is a scam artist, that all (or most) of his' or her' coins have been cleaned, that some are questionable concerning their authenticity, that he or she has someone working for or with them as a Shill Bidder and that his' or her' coins are way overpriced, etc, etc. etc, etc, etc, etc,! I believe that everyone has got the point(s) concerning this Seller and his' or her' items, so maybe it is time to quit harpooning the already dead whale! Let it go!:vanish: It's time to move on and find another Seller to totally destroy!:pencil::hammer::hammer:

Now can we let the old dogs lie and get back to answering more important threads and posts by other worthy Posters?

If an eBay seller feels that it is very likely that his auction will close with a less than desireable bid, it's not unheard of to yank the auction on the basis that "there was an error in the listing", an option that eBay permits without penalty (as far as I know because I have never done it).
